Passport expiry and entry to australia
 
Does anyone know if you need to have 6 months left on your passport when re-entering Australia ?
The passport is a New Zealand passport

[Visa Information - Destination] Australia (AU)

[Information For Normal Passports]
Passport required.
- Passports and/or passport replacing documents must be valid
on arrival.
Passport Exemptions:
- Holders of a "Document for Travel to Australia" (DFTTA)
issued by Australia.

VISA NOT REQUIRED.

Additional Information:
- Travel documents issued by a recognized authority are
accepted, provided [[TIDFT/AU/PA/AI/ID28761]]
- Passengers travelling on domestic sectors of international
flights within Australia [[TIDFT/AU/PA/AI/ID554]]
- Nationals of New Zealand must apply for a Special Category
Visa (SCV) when clearing immigration by presenting a valid
passport and completing a passenger card.
Warning:
- Passport number and nationality must match those stated on
the APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC).

Passengers arriving within 6 days after leaving or transiting
countries on Australia's list of yellow fever declared places,
at [[http://www.health.gov.au/yellowfever]] and not holding a yellow
fever vaccination certificate are subject to quarantine for 6
days. Australia's yellow fever declared places reflects the
list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission
[[TIRGL/YFIN]] with these exceptions:
- addition of Paraguay;
- Argentina limited to only the Misiones Province; and
- Galapagos Islands excluded from Ecuador.

AFAIK if you are eligible for the special purpose visa you do not need 6 months validity. That said, expect questions about what flight and when you are ticketed to fly out from Australia.

Would this be with a old style passport where you need to see a real person or does the 'chip' style machine ask you to go to the counter ?

Either. If immigration wants to ask you some questions SmartGate will not permit you through.

BTW are there any non-chip passports left? NZ changed to 5 year passport validity years ago.
