What’s Inside Some SXSW Attendees’ Bags Is Causing Airport Security Problems?

Stacks of magazine and SXSW swag bags are causing issues with TSA scanners because it's all showing up as a dense, unidentifiable mass.

Why is there no face-palm smilie available?

I call BS on this. I missed SXSW Interactive this year but I've been to the last 9 conferences, and while the conference program gets marginally thicker every year, its never EVER tripped any ETD alarms in the past. And the swag bags themselves have actually gotten progressively lighter each year as promos and giveaways are moved online. Can't help but feel like something else is going on here...

As I have noted on FT even more than a decade ago, stacks of some types of coated printed paper in magazine or book form can create black/opaque spots for various X-ray machines used by airport screeners. This isn't really unique to leaving AUS or SXSW attendees.

If ETD is being triggered, something else is going wrong.

Yes, the useless systems being used by the TSA. ;)
