Get Ready to Give Up Your Toothpaste

Olympic Threat: US Warns Airlines About Toothpaste Tube Bomb

From here:

The Department of Homeland Security has issued a warning to U.S. and some foreign airlines traveling to Russia for the Olympic Games to be on the lookout for toothpaste containers, which some intelligence indicates may actually hold ingredients that could be used to construct a bomb aboard a plane, a senior U.S. official told ABC News.

If I was to guess, the knee jerk reaction by the TSA will to ban all tubes of toothepaste.

My "Morons think movies are REAL!" sense is tingling.

A) Dentonite Toothpaste - License to Kill, 1989 - Q supplies James Bond with Deontonite in a traditional tube; Dentonite is actually a gel-like plastic explosive, which Bond uses to blow out a window in an assassination attempt on the films villain.

B) Mentadent Toothpaste - an actual toothpaste marketed in the United States. Sold in a binary form, in a dual-tube plastic pump container, it evokes both plastic explosive and the wonderful non-existent Binary Liquid Explosive from Die Hard With a Vengeance (which probably inspired the Liquid Bomber Plot of 2006).

And I just heard on the TV news that Russia is banning carrying on all liquids of any kind.

Hooray.

Be on the lookout for stupid "security". It's for joke or novelty purposes only, not to be confused with real security.

So happy I am giving Sochi a big fat pass. And Russia too for the foreseeable future.

Not good enough. Russia should ban passengers on all flights within or to the country.

I've seen pictures of those Olympic athletes. If they can't walk, run, ski, toboggan and/or swim to Sochi from (for example) Kiev or Tbilisi , they've got no business competing.

I've seen pictures of the spectators at previous Olympics and IME they could use some exercise, too.

;)

Luckily, said bombs cannot be made from several 3 oz. containers stuffed into a baggie. DHS is WAY ahead of these jokers.

Then there's Yakov Smirnoff

"The Russian Express Card: Don't leave home." *

*An allusion to the American Express slogan: Don't leave home without it.

Latest from CNN:

A former airline security chief anticipated that the threat will prompt authorities in the United States and Europe to clamp down on toothpaste and cosmetics.

yandosan Feb 6, 2014 5:37 am

I often cite toothpaste tube seizure as the epitome of idiocy of TSA Policy, especially when it's an old tube with little toothpaste content. Now it makes the news as their main concern. As if the bad guys aren't bright enough to switch the explosives to other containers. like shampoo or chapstick.

kochleffel Feb 6, 2014 6:48 am

I'm traveling to someplace sunny next week. How will they determine that my tube of sunscreen isn't really full of toothpaste?
