TSA Checking IDs as you deplane?
 

Last week, my parents flew back from Aruba, with a connection in Miami. At the top of the jet bridge in MIA, TSA workers had a dog sniffing bags, and everyone was asked for an ID. In the words of my father, "If you wanted to get off that plane, you had to show a picture ID." He was displeased, but complied.

Has anyone ever encountered this?

And let's assume MIA was his final destination and all he wanted to do was leave the airport. Theoretically, it seems to me that he would be well within his rights to decline to participate in their games. How could they threaten him with "DYW2FT"?

This layer of "security" has a certain parallel to the Savannah train station debacle.

That's almost certainly not TSA, more likely it was CBP. The CBP officers have dark blue uniforms and guns. TSA costumes are light blue and even Barney Fife was permitted more than they are permitted to carry.

It happened at ORD to me a few weeks ago. I was coming in on a direct flight from the middle east. It was most definitely a combination of CBP and TSA personnel. I got the impression that they were looking for someone specific. Fortunately, I sat near the front of the plane because the backup built very quickly. I felt bad for anyone with a tight connection.

I've seen CBP officers standing on the jetbridge waiting to arrest a passenger when getting off an international flight. That's probably what it was.

CBP routinely meets incoming flights and checks pax docs in the jetway/airbridge well before they get to the formal "arrivals hall" for processing. Sometimes it is targeted, sometimes random. Dogs are often part of the process.

They do this in TLV all the time but don't stop everyone.

It is appropriate for CBP officers to perform this function when necessary. Not TSA clerks.
