MSP's version of neighborhood watch

MSP uses volunteers to patrol its perimeter. There are currently about 90 of them.

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/dis...curity-efforts

"...The volunteers look for open or unlocked fences or people who are in places they shouldn't be. The goal is to prevent people from breaching the airport's border and sneaking in to tamper with planes, or even launch a surface to air missile...

...The volunteers are trained to call in incidents rather than confront anyone. Volunteers haven't exposed any dangerous crimes or terrorist attempts so far, but people who report security gaps get a reward of up to $50 and are entered into a $500 annual drawing. An MSP watch member recently received an award for finding an airport perimeter fence unlocked. .."

I saw that! I am applying to join right now as I love aviation photography and this looks like a great way to get close without the constant fear that I'll be asked to leave.

Oof-duh!

On the plus side, that's 90 fewer people driving 35 MPH in the left lane or holding up the line at the grocery store by writing a check for $6.00.

Good. As we all know, rocket launchers are a real problem in Minnesota.

State* Motto: "Of course we are important enough to be a terrorism target."

Actually, that could be the state motto for another 49 states, too.

*j/k. I love Minnesotans. Anyone that can survive those minus 300 degree winters is okay with me.

Wait, wait! We have the Mall of America! It is a perfect example of the plague of Western Materialism!

But it's a real killer for the accuracy of the numerous surface to air missiles. It's also hard to get your finger to work the trigger as you approach absolute zero.

"Double Cadre points this month for informing on a family member!"

Snoop and Snitch paranoia programs like this one always make my skin crawl. "Hey, look - there's a guy over there with a CAMERA! HE'S TAKING PICTURES OF AIRPLANES! CALL THE POLICE!" Ironically, it's people WITH cameras doing the panicking this time.

Me too.

My take on these programs is that the nerds, sorry enthusiasts, join
a) so they don't get snitched on
b) to look cool.

If terrorists were casing US airports these guys wouldn't see them, not that there are any, terrorists that is.

Basically anywhere you go where there's a fence line, it's vulnerable," said MSP police sergeant Dave Satre. "Anytime you put something up to keep people out, people are trying to find ways to get around it.

It's true. Including the high school baseball field, the local cinema, city hall
the train tracks. Potential evildoers are everywhere. Lurking in the shadows.
Also they take refuge under the cupboards, and even under your covers, or in your attic.
Trust no one. Except elected officials.

Fate of last two surface to air missiles in Minneapolis:

1) The first couldn't figure out which way to go on the cloverleaves and just gave up.

2) The second made a wrong turn in the Skyway and ended up at Leeann Chin. It was never heard from again, although customers reported chunks of metal in their food for the next several weeks.
