Since he had a visa for the US and I bet that was not 10 years old then his passport was ganteed to be one with biometric data!

The Us stopped excepting EU visitors without such a passport ages ago.

I have to agree pursue it - at least for the extra costs that were incurred.

This happens a lot with some of the airlines at DEN that are international. When the ticket counter checks you in, they inspect the PP and if it is deemed to be badly worn or damaged they will deny you the boarding pass.

I take your word for it, but where does it makes sense in a world of OLCIs, mobile boarding passes, etc?

Worn or damaged passports are still valid, btw.

Nor is the check in person.

The check in person is in charge of who gets on the plane. Doesn't really matter who is in charge of getting into the EU, because if your documents are not good enough to get past the check in counter, you won't be presenting them to any customs or immigration agents as you won't be flying anywhere.

Online check-in and check-in agent roulette are well possible with the same airline.

It does really matter who is in charge of getting into the relevant part of the EU, especially for common carriers subject to the laws of their home jurisdiction(s).

Wow, thanks all who chimed in, I owe many clarifications.

And what was exactly in bad shape?

Yes, he asked for a supervisor. He called the Netherlands and confirmed.

No, not CBP but the TSA - and the TSA agent said the document was acceptable by their standards.

That batch of Italian passports have a cover that tends to detach itself from the booklet.

OP, your friend should probably file for compensation, but the case won't be a slam dunk by any means.

Agree with you.

Precisely. Nowhere. Not just that: a subject claiming EU citizenship must be allowed any reasonable mean to prove it, even in complete absence of documents.

Mine is ripped and burned and have never been denied!

stifle May 28, 2013 1:25 pm

Mrs. stifle previously put her passport through the wash, and it was one of the old ones with a paper photo glued in. It was accepted without issue by all the agents she came across until it came up for renewal.

It would be interesting to see how a claim of €600 denied boarding compensation under EU law would go down.
