So the TSA went from 9/3 to 9/10 to 9/13 but it's still the SSDD as it's all about guns and knives with nary a ter'wrist caught

Just once, I'd really like to see the TSA tout that they've found something other than guns, knives and other assorted weapons

Get your TSA SSDD while it's hot off the presses....

  • Blasting Cap Discovered, 30 Loaded Guns
  • and Other Notable Items

http://blog.tsa.gov/2013/09/tsa-week...sting-cap.html

So this must be what the TSA considers an "other notable item"?

Bag Catches Fire in Atlantic City - This week at Atlantic City (ACY) a traveler’s checked bag blew open with three foot high flames and smoke. The cause? A large leaking can of hairspray was ignited by the spark of a lighter when the bag was loaded onto the rollers. No one was injured.

It still amazes me that 30-40 people every month forget that they have a loaded gun in their luggage when going through an airport.

Think about it, though, statistically. That's approximately 1 person per day, with approximately 2 million people per day flying in the US. 1 out of 2 million forgets a gun. Miniscule.

That assumes that all 2 million travelers per day have a gun to forget.

Don't get me wrong ... I think the statistical occurrence of guns at checkpoints versus number of passengers is still very low. But, then again, so is the rate of hijackings or other acts of mischief against commercial aircraft.

Nothing new, re: guns

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id...g=4844,6538112

In 1985, screeners found nearly 1500 guns in the first half of the year.

That's nearly twice the rate of gun finds by the TSA, and it was with lowly 1980's metal detector and x-ray technology.

Agreed. There are about 8 million concealed carry permit holders in the US, out of around 200 million adults, so about 4%. Apply the same share to travelers, and you're looking at around 80k people/day who could legally arrive at the airport with a firearm. Of those, one will try to bring their gun through security, and get caught.

Although, as the article notes, this was in the days when you could go to the gate without being a passenger - a lot of those people caught were folks who weren't flying, and might be more likely to forget that they were armed, I guess.
