I read this story on Reddit and I have to say it was extremely clever but also illegal potentially dangerous.

Since the comments on there are not very informed, I thought I'd post it here and see what more experienced travelers think.

Would you ever do something like this? Can it be justified in any way? What would be the potential consequences?

No, it can't be justified. And if you think about it, the writer of that thing did a lot of editorializing - characterizing what the people did in ways uncomplimentary to them, rather than simply describing their actions. Guy in the aisle seat got up to use the bathroom a few times. That's what happened. Look at how the writer described it.

If you have to go on and on and on like that to show that there's something wrong with the people you're talking about - there's nothing wrong with them.

States he is a twice a year flier, has a DYKWIA attitude, and feels the need to give "protips."

What a prime example of internet cajones. I'd bet that story conveys what he wanted to do, rather than what he actually did. I could be wrong, but the vast majority of the reddit stories I find to be exaggerated to beyond believable, this one included.

Family of inexperienced fliers, with a different social concept of personal space issues, gets up to use the restroom a few times. Big deal, I pick an aisle seat, and understand my tradeoff is getting up for others.

BS. Straight BS. Writing "SSSS" on the boarding pass in pen doesn't bat an eye anymore. SSSS data is hard-coded into the boarding pass barcode, so it flags at the gate.

Now, that's not to say a hyper-vigilant GA wouldn't see SSSS scrawled on a boarding pass and call the hyper-vigilant TSA over, who would then g-rape the victim anyway, but SSSS in pen isn't the indicator these days.

Also, I'm calling BS on that story. Reddit's full of self-made heroes who never actually did what they claim to have.

B.S. or not, it's a cowardly act. And to brag about it shows a serious social disconnect.

Yeah, I can't imagine anyone being able to write it on in pen and fool the TSA even if there wasn't anything in the computer.

"I fly a lot -- twice a year." Yeah, okay. The author of that piece sounds like a far less pleasant seat mate than the people he was criticizing.

Exactly. It took me no less than five flights this year to develop my grand sense of DYKWIAism. Before that I was a compliant sheep. Comlete rubbish.

I've read the beginning of this twice, and I still don't get it. I fly from AMS to MSP and back again several times a year and have yet to show my boarding pass in MSP. All they want is my passport and blue customs card.

What am I missing here?

Total BS. I'm embarrassed I followed the link but at least I learned a new place not to go on the Internet ...
