On Account Of A Cheese Spreader.

My sister came to visit from Atlanta and brought me a birthday present, one of those bottles that have been melted made flat in a kiln and made into a cheese board with a small cheese spreader attached. Actually it's pretty cool as it is one of those 3 dimensional clear Grey Goose Vodka bottles.

Anyway she had her roller board as carry on and it got flagged for an inspection in ATL. The TSO said she could not proceed with the small "knife". She argued that it was not a knife but a cheese spreader and was not sharp along the blade edge but dull and rounded. The TSO saw her point and went to get his supervisor. They studied the spreader carefully, rubbing their fingers along the edge and finally agreed that it was not a knife and let her go on.

Heck, the slab of glass would make a way better weapon than the cheese spreader!

Not completely unreasonable. On the positive side, they actually discovered something that looks like a knife and reacted appropriately.

But ignored the fact that you could break the glass cheese board over someone's head inflight and use the resulting shards to kill people. As long as they're checking for stupid things.

(bolding mine) Appropriate, common sense behavior on the part of the TSOs is indeed positive (sadly, it is also surprising).

Bet the pax wouldn't have gotten the cheese spreader past the 'cupcake commandos'.

You'd likely get a deeper cut from a piece of paper
than that cheese spreader.

Oh wait, when will they ban all forms of paper? :D

Security Theater is called that for a reason. Even back when they only had plastic silverware on board, you would still get handed a beer bottle in first.

Be thankful that they identified a potential forbidden item and correctly cleared it since it met the criteria for not being hazardous. Don't try and look at anything else in the situation. We take much more on board every day:

Umbrellas, belts, fountain pens, luggage handles, pc screens, service trays, bottles, soda cans, magazines, rulers, wheel axles, under-wires, credit cards, rings, necklaces, shoestrings and the list goes on.
