Here we go again: backgammon to blame for PHX flight diverson [merged threads]

No word if the three passengers spent too long in the bathroom. Or if they were strip-searched as part of their questioning.

UPDATE --

http://www.wpix.com/news/wpix-jfk-fl...,1851094.story

A passenger on the flight, Kevin Faley, told PIX11 News that passengers heard local police say, "It's the guys in Row 9. Seats A, B and C."

The three men seated in this row appeared to be of Middle Eastern decent and were escorted off the plane. But the TSA has not officially announced that they have taken anyone into custody.

Although the TSA would not elaborate on what made the crew believe the men were suspicious, they had apparently been passing around a wooden statue and looked nervous, according to Farley.
Out of an abundance of caution, trophies and statues will now be banned from carry-on luggage.

And new TSA regulations prohibit 'looking nervous' or Middle Eastern.

I just flew into STL right after this happened & saw the plane out there. This stuff is getting more & more stupid every day.

Great, the stupidity of flight crews are now trumping the idiocy of the TSA. Last time I checked, it was no illegal to occupy an vacant seat. If the pax did not cross cabins, the FA has no cause to order the pax to his "assigned" seat.

Honestly, you have to be a genuine Stepford these days not to arouse suspicion, by some automaton FA.

The three men remained in St. Louis for interviews with airport police, the FBI and the Transportation Safety Administration. Once cleared of wrongdoing, they were put on another plane to Phoenix, airport police chief Paul Mason said.

Mason said the men do not speak fluent English, but he did not speculate if a language barrier was part of the problem. They were also carrying a box that turned out to be for a game of backgammon, Mason said.

"It was their actions that caused the broad attention," Mason said. "The whole nation has been on alert and we've asked citizens, if you see something, say something.

"The flight attendant was concerned and the pilot decided to err on the side of caution," Mason said.

Mason said the men were traveling together. One of the men was not in his seat prior to takeoff, he said. Then, soon after the plane got into the air, one of the men began walking up the aisle. When instructed to return to his seat, he sat in another unassigned seat.
Something doesn't add up: The suspicious activity allegedly happened during and shortly after takeoff. So why did the plane not divert until it was almost halfway to its destination? If the flight attendants were so scared, why did the plane not dump fuel and return right away to JFK?

So you admit then, sir, that this whole ridiculous "See something say something" nonsense is having unintended consequences? Gee, imagine that...

My dearest hope, your Chiefiness, is that so many passengers start erring on the side of caution and NOT FLYING that you lose your job.

Or did it go like this:

Flight Attendant: "SIT DOWN!!!!!"
Passenger: Sits Down.

I guess she didn't say "Simon Says"...

Now this is a great sentence near the end of the news report:

"Also on Sunday, two F-16 fighter jets escorted two flights to New York City and Detroit after crews reported suspicious bathroom-related activity."

glad we haven't given in to fear

I don't know whether to laugh or cry when some politician or pundit spouts the nonsense that America hasn't "given in to fear" after 9/11. Events such as this amply demonstrate that we have reached the point where we are afraid of our own shadows.

OBL had to have died contented. For at most a few million dollars he has gotten this nation to squander countless billions. President Bush once said that the terrorists "hated us because of our freedoms". Since then the government has done its best to take those freedoms away. As long as TSA exists, OBL will have won the "war on terror".

Ah, so it's the VICTIM's fault...

Well, commercial flight is beginning to look a lot like boarding a crowded freight car for resettlement in the eastern front.

You guy should see the local media here in STL. This was the top story on the news last night - they're acting like the flight crew were heroes for preventing another 9/11 by diverting here and that STL should be proud for it's role in its antiterrorism efforts

Then they interviewed a few passengers - probably the same idiots who reported this to the flight crew. "Better safe than sorry. Handled it well. 9/11. Blah blah blah blah"

LuvAirFrance Sep 14, 2011 2:16 pm

Yeh, that's the whole thing. The media just blindly reinforces the whole mythology. On the Web and on channels like Link and FSTV is the only places you can get an alternate voice. But the masses just suck up the propaganda like they suck up corporate McFood.
