That is just way too creepy!

What book is that from?

lobster7 Jul 28, 2011 10:46 am

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

That is very disturbing.

"Olivia the Pig" is a series of children's books...

...that just got yanked from my daughter's potential reading list.

golfguy714 Jul 28, 2011 11:07 am

I agree that book should be yanked from everyones reading list. Just goes to show the lenghts that the bluee shirt supporters will go to indoctrinate the next generation. The author of that book should face shame and scorn from those of us that treasure our liberty!

WindOfFreedom Jul 28, 2011 11:11 am

Please cite author's name so I can avoid purchasing any titles for the grandies.

mulieri Jul 28, 2011 11:11 am

Interesting that the characters are all PIGS...

xolinlevh Jul 28, 2011 11:17 am

Is there a page with a drawing showing the children not to scream and cry when the pigs grope their chests and put their hands down their pants?

PTravel Jul 28, 2011 11:19 am

A little google research on the text on the page finds this:

And a google image search finds this:

At least the illustration shows use of HHMD (too bad these were banned by Pistole). However, it is unclear why such a little piglet would need any sort of secondary. Olivia should have been able to use the WTMD, like they have at VCE.

If the NoS were used, we would see some bacon...If the little pig were groped, would it still squeal like a pig?

cb1111 Jul 28, 2011 12:48 pm

You guys always wanted to see the SOP. It looks like it just got posted.;)

FliesWay2Much Jul 28, 2011 12:56 pm

It's strange that the authors, illustrators, and publishers would think that airport security would be relevant to the story they were telling in the book.

Also strange is that the clothing Olivia is wearing looks like prison garb.

They were not banned, they just are hardly ever used now. Of course, that will be a surprise to a child that may expecting the use of one, but instead gets groped by a stranger.

If the Nude-O-Scope is not properly calibrated, you could smell bacon.

I bought some books on Italian travel and language for my great-niece just recently and ran across this book in the process. Thank goodness for the reviews; they put me off completely. I would be horrified to give this as a gift!

FlyingHoustonian Jul 28, 2011 1:23 pm

Very sad to see that.

Some of the Olivia books are Caldecott Medal receipants IIRC.

G_Wolf Jul 28, 2011 2:19 pm

Frankly, I'm not that upset by their using HHMD to search for weapons. I would prefer that to the current scheme.

Not when you consider that most childrens' books have underlying messages that are supposed to make children more comfortable with their surroundings. If I child was frightened of getting on an airplane, I could see a parent finding relief in reading their child a book about a familiar character flying on an airplane.

2001 Honor Book : Olivia by Ian Falconer (Atheneum)

N965VJ Jul 28, 2011 7:16 pm

Ouch! Check out the reviews at Amazon.com One of my favorites ^:

Falconer's gone mad. Either that, or totalitarian. Olivia the pig is not descended from Orwell's Napoleon, is she? However, that might make more sense, given the "pleased" reaction she has on being patted down at the airport during a "weapons" search. People, teach your children the meaning of freedom, liberty, and personal integrity. Getting searched for weapons ought not be normalized into our society, nor should it be something that pleases us when we travel. This volume also has curious use of language, far in advance of the targeted audience. Perhaps Falconer got paid by the TSA to get it into print before it was fully vetted by competent editors?

Who knows? Bottom line, find something more appropriate for your young minds to ingest.

The screeners in the OP's post look intimidating. Something like this would be far better:

We need an artistic FT'er to alter the drawing a bit to fit reality. :p

Olivia does appear to be wearing a convict outfit though.

You and I in the not-too-distant future ?

rochel Jul 29, 2011 1:39 pm

I would not want any child of mine reading that. I wouldn't want them to think that this was condoned.

Nicely done! ^

These reviews are VERY helpful

Just finished voting up all of the reviews that mention how pleased Olivia is to be groped.

Only 29 people have done that so far to the most "helpful" scope and grope review - everyone else should log on to Amazon immediately and do the same.

In case anyone wants to start adding reviews to Barnes & Noble - the link to the book there is http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/oliv...ner/1019428354

Glad to see that someone noticed. :) :D

I was going to try to put a name badge on him that read "Negrin" but couldn't quite do it in a way that would have made it readable.

I suppose I could have changed Olivia's shirt to read "Free Rolando" to be a bit more overt. ;)
