pbjag-was this ua at ord or another terminal and if ua, are you referring to the checkpoint with a crew line and located to the left just after the global svcs area? if ua, was the first tso you encountered a heavy set 3 stripe female? if yes, she's a real piece of work as "me 'n my orthopedic shoes" had a run in with her on 9/11

LAX T4 today
My second opt out. I saw that the only line open had the NOS. They had sent a few people at random, but I thought I was going to get lucky. Unfortunately, the bag screening was really slow today. At least 2-3 people in front of me had big liquid containers that had to be fished out and the bag rescanned.
The TSA woman directed me through to the NOS. I said that I would opt out. I was made to walk between the panels (I walked very quickly). My things had been sitting there for only a bit as I had just pushed the last tub in when she ordered to the NOS.
The male TSA was very professional, and I could see my items the entire time. He started by showing me new gloves, then explained what he was going to do, did not touch me inappropriately anywhere. The buttocks were done with back of hand, and there was no genital contact. He then said they would do a test on the gloves as the last step. I thanked him for being professional.

Why is this happening? If I understand you (and others) correctly, your bags go through the xray and are sitting unattended at the end of the belt, possibly out of your sight. Meanwhile, you are separated from your wallet and passport while they are re-scanned? Or is it because you didn't put everything in your bag before putting it in the x-ray?
I never put my passport or wallet through the xray machine, they always stay on me all the time going the normal machine.

Perhaps we should start giving them a "DontScan.me" brochure if they ask why?
Might it be good for some of them to reach HQ or the local FSD?
BTW mostburger-flippers screeners don't ask.
I hope everyone is carrying them. I know I am carrying them everywhere I go in my back pocket, with the heading "What the Transportation Security Administration isn’t telling you ..." visible to the people behind me. A few people have asked me about them, and I have given them one and a little explanation.

That was maddening. Just maddening. I begged and pleaded to be moved about THREE FEET where I could at least see my things, but the TSO - in an incredibly unpleasant and shrill voice - ordered me to stand still.
My wallet had been in my back pocket, so I dropped it into the gray bin. Now I know better. Had I known THEN what I know now, I would have buried it deep in my briefcase.

Go to one of these sites and download yourself a copy (pdf). Print them out on your laser printer (2 sides) and fold them up. Or take a memory stick to Kinko's or other office place and print out a few hundred.

I'm interested in another aspect of the NOS (see next paragraph). Background... when asked why I "dared" to opt out, I mentioned that I would not volunteer to be exposed to additional radiation. Snuffy started with some crap about them being safe, blah, blah, blah. I asked him if he could explain the how the radiation was generated. He look dumbfounded (the reaction I was going for, BTW). Why still looking stupid and reverting to the "you have to" part of the program, I asked when the machine was last calibrated and if I could see the results and the name/training/certification of the person that did it. He said they didn't have to provide that information. I responded do you wonder why I opt out now? I got my pat down and moved along.
I would think the government would have a crap-load of requirements for operating a radiation device and using it on the general public. Here is my question. How are these things calibrated, by whom, how often, etc.? What are the qualification/training requirements for the person doing the calibration?
Based on other implementations and training, I'm sure the TSA is bungling this too. This should be flushed out and the results put on the fliers. IMO, this might raise serious legal issues for TSA.

Well, they won't release the original evaluation results with respect to radiation levels (x-ray) and signal strengths (MMW) -- do you expect them to release calibration certifications to the effect that they're operating (or perhaps not ) to the standards that they won't release?
This is a good point though. Where I work, every piece of equipment that can be calibrated or evaluated must be tracked down annually & calibrated or flagged as off-spec. Our offices were moved to another building while I was vacation in Australia a couple years ago & the calibration guy just about had a cow because he couldn't track down a power supply that was packed up with my stuff for a couple weeks. However, I would be shocked beyond belief if TSA showed the same level of concern for equipment that is used on humans.
Remember that they failed so miserably at keeping the puffers on-spec that they were warehoused.

I expect nothing but waste, fraud, and abuse from the TSA.
This one area seems like more fertile ground for a FOIA request-a-thon or a lawsuit than the privacy one, IMO. The government should not be able to willfully expose citizens to radiation, especially without any controls or oversight.
