Chase Declines Return of Statement Credit
Hyatt Biz card, ~1 year old, statement date 2nd of each month, planning to close a week or 2 after AF posted on Aug 1st. Early July made Hyatt reservation for Aug 2-6. Late July deleted this Hyatt Biz card and entered a different card to Hyatt profile. Balance on July 24 with no further charges in July was ~$500, paid on July 29 so balance on July 31 was $0.00. At check-in on Aug 2nd (even though I had remined myself several times prior to use a different physical card and specifically brought that card with me), forgot and reflexively said “yes” to “do you want to use the card (this Hyatt Biz) on file”?
Checked out 8/6, as always asked for hard copy of folio, was in a rush, didn’t notice last 4 digits of card used. Called Chase on 8/7 (day I got home) to close the card and have AF refunded, balance at the time was $199.00, noticed 8/6 Hyatt charge “pending”, asked agent to send me a letter stating the account was closed and the balance was zero. Called hotel immediately afterwards, they very quickly refunded the Hyatt Biz card and charged another card. 8/7/25 letter (excerpted below) received ~8/12/25. Called Chase again few days later (when balance indicated “-$50.00”) to tell them to reverse the $50 “fees and adjustments” (statement credit, one of the benefits of the card) as the Hyatt triggering charge was refunded. Was told it had to be investigated by a specific team and I would hear back in 7-10 days. Received 8/16/25 letter (excerpted below) from Chase today. Called Chase just now, entered last 4 of account # and zip code, pressed “0”, live agent picked up quickly. As soon as we said hello, she said “do you want the $50 refunded?” I asked if it could be transferred to another of my Chase business cards, she said “which one”, I said “my Ink ABC ending in 1234”, she entered the request and said it would take 24 hours, call duration 3 minutes. I tried to give it back to Chase, Chase didn't want it. (AF refund was processed on 8/7 or 8/8 and backdated to 8/1.) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4336d99354.jpg |
The $50 credit is probably funded by Hyatt.

Interesting scenario...
I suppose their argument makes sense. In theory they reversed that charge so you were not entitled to the $50. Per the terms You can earn a $50 statement credit per qualifying Hyatt purchase with your World of Hyatt Business Credit Card up to 2 times each anniversary year (for a total of $100). |
I posted this DP mainly related to the frequent discussions here regarding “clawback(s)” of (any) benefit(s). Some of us sometimes think “we’re getting away with something” or “pulling the wool over Chase’s (or AmEx’s) eyes” when a benefit (that perhaps SHOULD be clawed back, such as this example) is NOT clawed back.
Apparently, at least in this example, Chase has specific procedures regarding clawback(s) and thus Chase MUST be aware that some benefits are ultimately “unearned” due to refund of the triggering charge. If Chase didn't (want to) claw it back after I asked them to, what are the chances Chase would do so on their own volition? It also goes to the AmEx benefits (primarily for me the Hilton Aspire Resort credit) which haven’t been clawed back (from me for 4-5 years) despite refund of the triggering charge (and many admonitions here of RAT squad consequences). |
True...Typically after 3-4 months of a credit balance on a card, Chase automatically issues me a check, wonder if it will happen here. Please report back if they due

I think there is confusion because "return" often means "refund", but in this instance you were inviting Chase to "reverse" the credit.

“Reverse”, “clawback”; I say tomahto, Chase says tomayto ;).
