How to handle a negative UR balance?
I have both a Freedom Unlimited and Chase Sapphire Preferred. As soon as I see points accumulate in the FU account I always transfer them immediately to the CSP account because of the increased portal redemption value, transfer abilities, etc.. Last month I did this without realizing that the UR balance in the Freedom account did not include a deduction for a large charge that had been refunded. As a result, I'm now showing a negative UR balance of 6,000 pts. At the same time, I have plenty of UR points in the CSP account to "cover" this. If I attempt to transfer CSP UR points to the FU account, will they automatically be applied to the negative UR balance? Or can that only be addressed through organic spend on the FU card?
I'm asking because I noticed fine print on the transfer page indicating that you can only transfer any particular group of points one time. I would prefer not to transfer points to the FU account and have them stuck there, except for purposes of eliminating the negative balance. Thanks in advance for any tips! |
As long as the account is open and you don't intend to close it, I wouldn't worry about it. Just let it repay the deficit over time with earned points as you spend on that card.

Don't worry be positive! :)

I will sometimes do this intentionally if, for example, I need some United miles for a rewards flight. I will book something in the future and then refund it to get the points. It is all fine.

Thanks to all for the replies. I'm not actually worried about this vis-a-vis Chase -- although the comments are nonetheless reassuring. It's more of an internal housekeeping matter for me, I like knowing how many points I actually have available at a glance without doing a bunch of math in my head. If it were a negative balance in a bank account I'd just transfer money over and the balance would immediately be made right. But the point accounting system at Chase appears to be a bit more complicated, in that point adjustments appear to be made just once a month. So perhaps I'll just stick with the "let it be" advice here.

Recycling an old thread but similar issue (although at the fault of Chase and not me). I have several chase cards and frequently consolidate the points to my CSR. Apparently Chase made a mistake on one of my Freedom Flex cards and accidentally credited me approximately 60k points back in May. I didn't realize this happened and just consolidated those points in the CSR and eventually used a good portion of them for hotels and airfare during the summer. A few months later (around September) I notice a big negative balance and "courtesy adjustment" for the 60k on the card. When I called and escalated with Chase to find out why they deducted the 60k they mentioned points were mistakenly debited a few months prior. The rewards activity was no longer available including the original mistake, but I could see the point balance increased significantly from one statement to the next without the expected use. So now I have about -55k points on the card and with the broader changes to the CSR and others am moving much of my spend away from Chase (not due to this mistake but because of overall changes and devaluation). Any idea what Chase will do with the credit sitting on the card for so long (especially since the original mistake was their mistake)? Can I just let the card sit in my sock drawer indefinitely?
Thanks, Dave |
