Please record data points in a structured form in this wiki (in addition to posting to the thread):

Date of the offer [mm/dd/yyyy], the offer, how long you had the card and yearly spend)

__________________________________________________ _____________
Tips:

When you call, you MUST ask if there are any offers on your account. Don't ask for an AF waiver, ask if they can credit your account the $95 (or whatever your AF is) to your account. They cannot remove the AF, but they can credit an amount to offset it. If you cancel your card within 30 days of receiving retention bonus, then Chase may claw back that bonus Note that Chase has shortened the period in which you can close the card and get the fee refunded. It is 30 days for most (or all?) cards.

If you don't get a retention bonus, the card you are holding may have the option of a downgrade. Cards that are downgraded may be upgraded at a later date. For example a no-fee Sapphire product exists for downgrade which is not available to new applicants. Consolidated discussion of that topic is here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase...16-onward.html

If you have Ultimate Rewards points in the account you're calling about, try transferring them to another account before calling. For example, if you will ask for a retention on your Sapphire card, transfer the points to your Freedom card in advance.

The archived 2020 edition is here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chas...-archived.html

Had the card since 2014? Same offer for me; probably 5-8K spend. My annual fee has remained $350 too. This is the third year in a row of being offered the $150 statement credit. My fee posted in August and I kept forgetting to call. Glad I did!

11/15/2022: Just called in (via the number on the back of the card), asked to be transferred to retention, and got a retention offer for $50 on my Chase Ink Plus. (I just opened a Chase Ink Cash.) $50 isn't enough to offset the CIP's $95 AF, will likely PC to a CIU

Did you cover all of these on a single call? How did you manage the conversation?

Yes, single call. After asking rep to check whether there were any offers available on the first card, for which the annual fee had just posted, I then asked her to check each of my others in turn.

I would love to hear from others who try a similar strategy. In my experience, I've been nervous to try, as the Chase reps I've encountered seemed reluctant to offer the easy retention offers and made me go through verbal hoops to get to the point of offering them.

I bet it's a case of YMMV. Doubt it would work very often. Reps seem anxious to "move on".

$550 fee on CSR just posted. Spent about $5K+ on the card in the past year (most of spend goes on Freedom Unlimited and Flex cards -- $50K+). No offer. I didn't push it as it was late. May try during business hours to get a hold of the specific retention desk.

Ive done that with AmEx many times. I think I may have too many open credit card accounts, I periodically review them all to see if any can be closed. Some representatives have said that its very responsible as part of overall financial management.

Its not like youre telling them anything they dont already know, their computer has a lot more details about all your credit card accounts than all but the most detailed of us do. Im pretty detailed, but their computers have more information than I do.

Strongly recommend not accepting a retention offer at a time significantly removed from the annual fee posting. When I called to discuss a bunch of cards, I ended up accepting a relatively small retention offer on a high annual fee AmEx card two months after the second annual fee posted. The problem is that locked me in to paying the THIRD annual fee (must keep account open for one year after accepted retention offer) without a high probability of getting a retention offer again two months later (after the third annual fee was paid).

(This post has the details of my prematurely accepted AmEx retention offer.)

My fee just hit. I'll see if there is a retention offer for the CSR which I've had since 2016. Heavy usage on this card - it gets all of my dining and wine purchases at Bern'f Fine Wine & Spirits in Tampa. Bern's uses the same credit card system as they do for the steakhouse, so I get the dining rate on hooch. I believe I can put the dining on an Unlimited card and still get the 3%. My hotels go on my Biz Ink. I think for $550, I'll PC to another Freedom and not redeem points through PYB until I get a new CSR card in the future.

How many Freedom cards can one have?
