Please record data points in a structured form in this wiki (in addition to posting to the thread):

Date of the offer [mm/dd/yyyy], the offer, how long you had the card and yearly spend)

__________________________________________________ _____________
Tips:

When you call, you MUST ask if there are any offers on your account. Don't ask for an AF waiver, ask if they can credit your account the $95 (or whatever your AF is) to your account. They cannot remove the AF, but they can credit an amount to offset it. If you cancel your card within 30 days of receiving retention bonus, then Chase may claw back that bonus Note that Chase has shortened the period in which you can close the card and get the fee refunded. It is 30 days for most (or all?) cards.

If you don't get a retention bonus, the card you are holding may have the option of a downgrade. Cards that are downgraded may be upgraded at a later date. For example a no-fee Sapphire product exists for downgrade which is not available to new applicants. Consolidated discussion of that topic is here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase...16-onward.html

If you have Ultimate Rewards points in the account you're calling about, try transferring them to another account before calling. For example, if you will ask for a retention on your Sapphire card, transfer the points to your Freedom card in advance.

The archived 2020 edition is here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chas...-archived.html

One data point--I received a $250 courtesy credit (or retention offer) back in November when a lot of people were receiving offers. My annual fee just posted on 2/1 and was still $450.

Great timing! With that and assuming you got your $300 travel/restaurant credit, you actually made $100!

I'll piggyback off of this and say I got the $150 credit last year in November and got a $450 annual fee on 2/1 as well.

Csr. $450 fee just hit on 2/1. Only 2k spending last year on the card vs 20k the year before as we did only one trip and all dining spending went to various Amex cards that had promos (aspire 250 x 2, bonvoy 10x) and freedom unlimited having 3x restaurants and 5x groceries. Also redeemed 700k points between that one trip and pay yourself back. No offer. Closed the account.

How is it even possible that people get renewed for the CSR with a $450 af since they already increased the fee to $550 last spring? Yes some are getting statement credits for a discounted AF right off the bat?

Sapphire Reserve: Had about 5 years. 8K spend last year. Called and asked, no offers. Told I can wait to decide up to 40 days after the statement closes. Very likely to cancel and save the $150 I would be paying for benefits I can't use in Japan.

World of Hyatt: Asked as I thought the annual fee would increase since I had the legacy card until recently. Told my fee (due in August) would be $75. Not sure if that is correct though. I'll wait until it is closer to Aug before asking about a retention offer.

Called after the Chase British Airways Visa $95 AF posted. Over $50K spend on card last year and this was the first annual renewal. Told there were no retention offers and no free downgrade options, but the agent just touted the benefits for taking vacations with British Airways. Umm, no thanks. He seemed happy to let me cancel without any other opposition. Will call back and close the card, but first want to ask: does anyone know if I will lose the Companion Pass I earned in 2020 but have not yet redeemed?

Card holders have access to extra saver award space in economy (labeled XN), typically domestic economy segments. I believe it should be same between cards. On searches, you will see "Exclusively available to you as a MileagePlus Chase Cardmember."

Thank you for this clear explanation.
