When someone reports an account closure here, people are curious as to both the background on the Chase relationship and any/all potential shut down triggers. Please answer any relevant questions to give details. This could help figure out what happened or how you could proceed:
- Background: Do you have both Credit Cards and Banking accounts with Chase? Tell us your history at Chase. What do you feel the trigger could have been? Does anything unusual (from the bankers perspective) go on in your accounts? How long have you had a banking relationship with Chase? Please explain.
- Ultimate Rewards: Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last names? Did you sell UR points to someone?
- Potentially suspicious activities: Do you use multiple sources to pay your credit card bills, such as Walmart Bill Pay? Do you ACH using multiple accounts? Did you recently wire transfer large amounts into or out of your Chase accounts?
- Bonus Earnings: Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
- Other possible Triggers:
- Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
- Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line or cycling the credit lines on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
- Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
- Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit recently? Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score? Do you mimic a "bust out" profile? (Someone maxing out credit prior to filing bankruptcy)
- If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
- Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
- Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
- Did you abuse the Chase Refer a Friend system?
- Did you use/abuse Chase's new checking/savings sign up bonus incentives?
- Did you bounce a check for a credit card payment?
- DId someone at your address get shut down also?
- Do you have a Chase mortgage or other accounts at Chase? Are they in good standing?
- Did you dispute or return items on your credit cards? How many times?
- Have you recently needed back office help on your accounts, which may have triggered a review or called attention to something?

So your contention is that if you break the law and get caught and punished, the next step is to not only break the same law again, but do it more aggressively.

I don't think that billion dollar banks that have been punished big time for ML activity actively go out looking for more ML business. I kinda feel that they shy away from such behavior

I gave an alternative if you dont want a bank thats gonna close your account because someone in a cubicle thinks youre engaged in illegal activity because of some formula you dont fit into.

Quick Question, I purchase about $1,000 in gift cards a month on my Ink at Staples, I have been doing it for years and have never had any issue. Would a purchase of $5,000 in gift cards in a single month raise any eyebrows at Chase?

Chase shut down DP :/ Please do not quote this post. So I can remove later if needed please!!
- 1/24 (only one credit card i ever opened and owned on my name). 760+ score. Have a chase checking account for 2.5 years
- Spouse got shutdown 2 years ago by chase. We think it is due to 5x MS on ink. I was a auth user on my spouse's personal and business credit card. Obviously those cards were closed along. My checking account remained unaffected. I had no other credit card or credit history at that point except being auth user on couple of other spouse's credit card
2 years later
- We moved 6 months ago. Applied for CIP on my name. Went to pending and status on phone was 2 weeks
- Waited for 48 hours per chart and status turned to 7-10 days. Called and they wanted to verify me with address proof. Faxed the same
- Status changed to 2 weeks. Then went back to 7-10 days. Called again and they said the address on the proof was slightly different from application. Agent suggested we could modify the address on app and push it through. Did that and got approved. Phone line status said approved as well.
Boom. Was so excited.
- After 5-6 days, Got a shutdown letter in the mail. A generic "we have decided to close your account". It was for my checking account. It also said the account will be closed on a specific day next month
- The letter was dated exactly on the day my CIP was approved by recon agent. Approval was late in the night. So I am assuming the checking account shut down was before approval during that day?
- Was so upset. At that point, we were thinking that we will not even receive the CIP or was expecting to get another letter for closing CIP (if that was actually opened) with the reason "our affiliate decided to close your account blah blah".
- Couple of days later, got CIP card in the mail. Have not activated it
- As of today, it has been another week and no letter yet about CIP shut down. Have still not activated CIP
Confused on how to proceed :/
- Did they link me to my spouse and decide to shut down? This was one of the reason we waited until we moved to apply for chase credit card hoping that chase will not be able to link our new address with my spouse
- Isn't it odd that the checking account shutdown is dated in the future? Wouldn't they usually shut down effective immediate? I was even able to do a zelle transfer after the shut down letter date and before I received the letter. Have not tried anything after seeing the letter
What should I do now?
- Should I try activating the CIP?
- Should I manually cancel my checking account without waiting for the auto shut down date in November? Then try to active CIP and see what happens?
- Mail executive office?
Would really appreciate the input. Again, please do not quote this post. So I can remove later if needed please!! Just do a @tryingherenow please

I would call the bank account and ask to speak with a supervisor. You need to understand the reasons they closed your checking account. A friendly supervisor can dig up some info for you. If the supervisor does not discuss, call again at another time.
You need to understand the cause before you touch your CIP.
No need to talk to EO. It is the last phone number that you want to call. And EO almost does not help anything at all.

Do you think a supervisor might be able to see the reason? Dont they usually just read the we cant disclose but decided to close or something like that. Even if they see something, can they help or do anything?
Also, is there a reason why I haven't received a CIP shutdown letter? Or may be they closed it, didnt bother sending one since its super new and I may not even be able to activate?

Had 2 cards (Biz Card A and Biz Card B) each at $5K credit limit. Asked to transfer $3K from each to Biz Card C.
Biz Cards A and B now show $2K credit limit, but $0 available credit. Biz Card C now shows $9K credit limit, but $12K available credit? What happened? Are Biz Cards A and B shut down?
4 personal cards still fine so far.

You are free to talk with customer service about the status of your CIP. They won't even touch it.

P2 applied for her first Chase card, a CSP early September. MSR met during first statement period.
Applied and was approved for CIP at the end of October.
Today when checking the accounts online, both the CSP and CIP shows as closed. Says to call a number. Will not call, but instead will later today go to a local branch and see what is going on.
Hopefully not a complete shut down.
