Chase Shut Down thread: (Archived version found here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase-ultimate-rewards/1526572-chase-closed-my-credit-card-account-s-consolidated.html]
There is a general Shut Down thread in the Manufactured Spend forum, found here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/manufactured-spending/1948543-2019-shutdown-thread.html

If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

What happened?
When someone reports an account closure here, people are curious as to both the background on the Chase relationship and any/all potential shut down triggers. Please answer any relevant questions to give details. This could help figure out what happened or how you could proceed:
  1. Background: Do you have both Credit Cards and Banking accounts with Chase? Tell us your history at Chase. What do you feel the trigger could have been? Does anything unusual (from the bankers perspective) go on in your accounts? How long have you had a banking relationship with Chase? Please explain.
  2. Ultimate Rewards: Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last names? Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Potentially suspicious activities: Do you use multiple sources to pay your credit card bills, such as Walmart Bill Pay? Do you ACH using multiple accounts? Did you recently wire transfer large amounts into or out of your Chase accounts?
  4. Bonus Earnings: Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  5. Other possible Triggers:
  6. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  7. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line or cycling the credit lines on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  8. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  9. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit recently? Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score? Do you mimic a "bust out" profile? (Someone maxing out credit prior to filing bankruptcy)
  10. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  11. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  12. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  13. Did you abuse the Chase Refer a Friend system?
  14. Did you use/abuse Chase's new checking/savings sign up bonus incentives?
  15. Did you bounce a check for a credit card payment?
  16. DId someone at your address get shut down also?
  17. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other accounts at Chase? Are they in good standing?
  18. Did you dispute or return items on your credit cards? How many times?
  19. Have you recently needed back office help on your accounts, which may have triggered a review or called attention to something?

Bravo. I'm a lemme-talk-to-your-supervisor kinda guy!

Found out that all my chase cc accounts were closed yesterday. Heres my situation and speculations about the closure:
11 month credit history, 730 score. Got 2 chase cards in June(CFU, CSP) and applied for freedom in early September and got rejected due to short credit history and too many new accounts. 5 cards in the past 6 months and 7 cards in total in the past year, which includes chase Marriott Bonvoy boundless(approved on Sept 21, and I have yet to receive it). Both CSP and Marriott were applied through just for you.
I do spend a lot with CFU to get 3X UR and have been making payments as soon as I see the transactions posted due to a low CL(1200). I added an AU to the CFU card and activated the card for her just yesterday, which is the same day the accounts are closed.

It seems to me that its because I have a lot of accounts in a short period of time and that I spend too much(I guess). I do have a chase checking account, which I use to pay off my credit cards. Went to the bank today and the banker said they dont deal with credit cards(what?). Sent secure message to chase, they replied and asked me to call 1-800-290-1316, which is the fraud department.

Any suggestions on what I should do and how I should do next? It kind of freaked me out. Thanks.

Along with so many new applications for credit, this is almost certainly the final trigger. Unfortunately, when Chase gets uncomfortable, they simply shut you down with no warning and no questions asked.

As Pallhedge said, you raised several red flags. The short credit history and large number of apps is one trigger. The 3 Chase cards in 7 months or less is also a trigger, since your history is only 11 months old. For someone with a longer history and track record of payments, this by itself might not trigger a review, but in your case, you start to fit a high risk "bust out" profile. The low credit line of $1200, being cycled repeatedly, is another trigger. Unfortunately, I think you need to write off Chase and go slower with other banks. Your chances of getting your Chase cards reinstated are nil.

I wouldnt say theyre nil. Probably half the people who report a Chase shutdown end up getting the cards reopened. In the OPs case, cycling his credit limit is probably what triggered the review. Its worth making a couple calls and/or writing a couple letters.

So I called today. The reason for closure was too many new account/inquiries in short time, short credit history, little info on file. I was asked basically why apply for other credit cards when chase has already given me 3. I explained that I needed for hotels/flights for holidays and that I needed to travel a lot back and forth to my partnera city. The rep said she would add a note to the request for a second review, and asked me to wait till like 10/11 when they pull credit file again. Is this the normal process for recon (and reinstatement if theres a chance?) Im wondering if people have their cards reinstated right away after some calls or if this waiting is normal. Thanks a lot.

The cards rarely get reinstated by the rep handling the phone call, so that part is normal.

Have you applied for anything else in the past month that will show up on your next credit pull?

If I were you, if/when you talk to a supervisor in a week or two, I'd promise not to apply for anything else for six months to a year, tell them you really like Chase, and ask for a second chance. If they still say no, ask if there's any chance of them re-opening even one card, perhaps with a lowered credit limit. Otherwise, you could be looking at a few years before Chase will let you back in. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply! I really appreciate your time and answer.
I got CFU and CSP in late June. Applied for freedom on 9/2 and got rejected. Got approved Amex delta gold on 9/3, Amex plat Morgan Stanley on 9/19, Chase Marriot on 9/20. Amexs cards show up 2 months later so I think Im ok right?
Also, would you suggest I call them again and ask to speak to a supervisor before or after the second review?
Again, thank you for your help.

There's little point in calling back until after they've done their review.

If Chase thought you had too many new accounts as of the 9/20 denial, they're not going to like the two new Amex cards when those show up this month or next. You need to cool it with new credit apps for at least six months to a year. It's possible Chase could re-open a CC(s) for you, only to shut them down again when the new Amex cards show up. It sounds like you have an 11-month credit history with accounts that have an average age of maybe two or three months, which is extremely low.

These big banks are ridiculous. The new norm is if you suddenly get a big cash injection you must be a drug dealer/money launderer/engaging in illegal activity. I was banned from Bank of America for too much cash I deposited (in a cash business). Then recently had USAA close my accounts because of two large $33,000 transactions from customers in Germany.

Banking and and banks have gotten a little crazy in my opinion. You need to go to Wells Fargo or HSBC, theyll let anything fly.

Those two have been fined massive amounts in recent years. HSBC, in particular, got crushed for money laundering violations.

As long as banks know where the money is coming from and can verify the source, they are more than happy to accept it, no matter whether it is cash or wire.

However, the source is the problem. If that is questionable, then there are going to be issues and most banks don't like issues and will shut down accounts that have them.
