When someone reports an account closure here, people are curious as to both the background on the Chase relationship and any/all potential shut down triggers. Please answer any relevant questions to give details. This could help figure out what happened or how you could proceed:
- Background: Do you have both Credit Cards and Banking accounts with Chase? Tell us your history at Chase. What do you feel the trigger could have been? Does anything unusual (from the bankers perspective) go on in your accounts? How long have you had a banking relationship with Chase? Please explain.
- Ultimate Rewards: Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last names? Did you sell UR points to someone?
- Potentially suspicious activities: Do you use multiple sources to pay your credit card bills, such as Walmart Bill Pay? Do you ACH using multiple accounts? Did you recently wire transfer large amounts into or out of your Chase accounts?
- Bonus Earnings: Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
- Other possible Triggers:
- Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
- Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line or cycling the credit lines on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
- Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
- Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit recently? Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score? Do you mimic a "bust out" profile? (Someone maxing out credit prior to filing bankruptcy)
- If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
- Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
- Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
- Did you abuse the Chase Refer a Friend system?
- Did you use/abuse Chase's new checking/savings sign up bonus incentives?
- Did you bounce a check for a credit card payment?
- DId someone at your address get shut down also?
- Do you have a Chase mortgage or other accounts at Chase? Are they in good standing?
- Did you dispute or return items on your credit cards? How many times?
- Have you recently needed back office help on your accounts, which may have triggered a review or called attention to something?

I have some weird issue with a Chase card (IHG). I never used this card, just paid annual fee, but in March there was a promotion to get 1000 points after making 3 contactless payments, so I did. It went through. Few days ago I noticed that there is a Bestbuy offer on this card to get 10% off up to $300, as well there was a Simplymiles promo to get 750 miles at Bestbuy after spending $200, so I decided to go ahead and spend $200 at Bestbuy. I added the card to Google Pay and went to Bestbuy, but the card was declined. Next day I took a physical card and went to Bestbuy again, the card was declined again. So I called Chase and was redirected to a CSR. After some verification and hold for a few minutes, she told me I will be contacted by a "specialist" within 24 to 72 business hours in order to resolve the issue, meanwhile I can't use the card. My other Chase cards still work. Should I be worried?
All of a sudden, there is lots of activity on the card, albeit normal. The fraud department is concerned and will need your input to reactivate the card.
I think that once you explain your activity (and as an aside, I would not go into great detail as to why you are spending on the card, just that you decided to start using it) the card should be reactivated and you will be good to go.

But we're in the same boat. TSMRSRNE churned the IHG last month and, aside from the SUB, I can't see keeping that dud of a card after the first year. Fortunately, we're staying at three swanky* properties in Arizona next month, so we'll get some intended-use out of that card after all.
*Swanky as far as Holiday Inns go anyway.
RNE, wondering how likely is it for Chase to shutdown an unused card whose AF gets paid?

This is a card which as you state had no activity on it for "years" other than paying the annual fee.

When I logged onto my business account today, one of my Ink cards is completely missing. I use it regularly, with no weird spending patterns. I pretty much only use if for my cable and cell phone, and have been every month for years. I did transfer UR points last month to my spouse, which we've done at points in the past without issue. The point transfer is the only thing I can think of that could have caused a problem. I didn't get anything in the mail or by email indicating they've shut the account down. I show a zero UR balance, but I'm not sure if I had any or not (bad recordkeeping, I know). Has anyone heard of anything like this? I still have two active accounts showing up (a United business card and another Ink card), so it's not like I got a full shutdown. I'm hoping maybe it's a temporary glitch, and the account will be back tomorrow? Thanks for any insight or theories as to what might be going on!

I did nothing and logged in now and it's back.
So I guess everything is fine?

This happened to me earlier in the week. I logged in to pay the bill and the card (Ink Unlimited) was just gone but other business cards were still there. There was a banner that said they were experiencing website issues and paying credit card bills was broken anyway. So I decided to wait it out.
I did nothing and logged in now and it's back.

Yes, according to a sprinkling of anecdotes from mostly anonymous -- though some public -- sources, people have been approved for cards after a shutdown. Chance of success seems to improve with greater time between shutdown and application. We're talking many months for sure and perhaps many years. Good luck.
