Sapphire Reserve Annual Travel Credit

How are the dates calculated?
For cards issued prior to May 21, 2017 it was Reimbursed per Calendar year, not membership year. Purchases must be posted (not pending) by your December statement (dated any time Dec 1 through Dec 31) to be credited against current year's $300 credit. Any travel spend that posts after the December statement will credit against the next year's $300 credit.

For cards issued after May 21, 2017, it will be reimbursed by membership year.

But my 2nd annual fee is after May 21, 2017, why didn't my travel credit reset?
Because if you got your card before that date, your travel credit will continue to reset after your December statement.

Does the travel credit count as minimum spend?
Spend is spend, the credit is the credit. The $300 reimbursement is a separate item from spending requirements( the $300 reimbursement on travel, $100 Goes all count towards the $4,000 only the $450 yearly fee doesn't). You must spend $4000 for your signup bonus UR points. If part of that spend is categorized as travel, a credit will post to your account accordingly. They are separate items.

Even if you return a purchase after you've met your $4000 initial spend it will not count against your spend.

Can I get two travel credit fees if I apply in the middle of the year?
Not for applications after May 21, 2017.

Have you looked at the PDF statements in your online account? I do not know for certain if they generate the PDF versions if you elect to receive paper statements, but it's worth looking to see if one was issued in December 2016.

I have an email from Chase that says my December 2016 account closed on Dec. 4, 2016. I didn't receive a statement for that closing date nor had I even received the card by that date.

I think something may be wrong with Chase's dates for this account.

My first travel spend was on Dec. 11, 2016.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get another $300 travel credit before my annual fee is due.
Based on all the information you provided, you never had access to a 2016 travel credit. It's all been 2017 for you. Beginning December 2, you will have access to your 2018 credit and you probably won't be billed your AF until Jan 1.

And I fully believe that this will continue to confuse people next year as well, yet it's really not that complicated. And in the Wiki. And you can check how much of the current year credit you've used by simply looking on the Ultimate Rewards website.

Also, if I recall correctly, the rules are different for those who opened their account after a date in May 2017, and that will confuse people who read about one set of rules but hold an account subject to the other.

Yes, I have looked in the pdf statement on the Chase.com site. My first statement was received in January 2017.

My first purchase on this card was December 8, 2016. I received it on December 7, 2016.

My first statement payment due date was Feb. 01, 2017.

How is a statement date determined? Is it the month I receive the statement or is it the month the payment is due or is it the month of the closing date?

Question

Are only the hotels listed in the Wiki (top of page) eligible for the travel reimbursement? I was thinking about booking a hotel or some type of lodging in Central America, would that work?

Both the success and failure lists in the wiki are just collected data points, not an exhaustive list. In general I think it all just boils down to how the merchant is coded.

My card anniversary is in Jan, and I don't plan to renew. In order to take the 2018 travel credit, I'm thinking of booking a June/July 18 WN ticket on Jan 1 for my wife to some location we might or might not go. She will have the companion pass by then. If I understand correctly, the credit should post more/less right away, making the flight pretty much free if I pay $300ish. And due to WN's no change fees, I should be able to use the credit to change the dates and location to pretty much anything within the year once I have a better idea where we want to go - is this correct?
