Southwest Airlines GCs work fairly easily. I've generally bought them for $150 and said they're excess baggage fees.

I've traveled internationally with the card. The folks in China and Indonesia couldn't get it over how heavy it was. They kept showing to other front desk staff and trying to bend it.

Had many cases they were impressed with my reserve card and I'm like you'll like this one better. :O

American Airlines GiftCards are no longer easy good for the $300 credit.
Last year I purchased them and they went through as common purchases. Yesterday I repeated and AA designated the charge was for Gift Cards and Chase csr refused the $300 credit.
However, the same day I sent a Secure Message and the 3 $100 "fees" were approved.
I got $100 giftcards because the AA overweight bag fee is $100.

- One is the size of the purchase. Our first year with the card, we did get a $300 single charge reimbursed. It was the co-pay on a mileage upgrade, which translated in our presentation to a seat upgrade fee. So I know a large charge can be done, and I don't doubt that some have done this with GCs. This said, no matter how they coded these things, I think that things go better with smaller charges.
- Now for the real problem: The coding of the purchase as a GC. In 2016, I purchased GCs from aa.com using this card on multiple occasions. In early 2016, they coded the standard, non-descript way on the card account. In April, they coded explicitly as a GC (same $ amount, by the way). By Fall, it was back to a generic code. So I would not give up entirely here.

I've done some searching here but can't find the answers even though I know they must be in this thread somewhere. I tried calling customer service for the card and reached a couple of clueless reps. So if someone could help:
1. Once you quality for the three free nights, you must use them them within one year. But do you still have them even if you cancel the card?
2. The $300 airline credit does NOT apply to change fees, right?

<cough> Hypothetically, </cough> if both the ticket itself <subjunctive> were </subjunctive> low, like what a baggage charge might be, then <arithmetic> low - $100 </arithmetic> might be an even lower charge, on the order of what a cabin purchase might be ... That could happen.

Does anyone know if you can book a room using a different credit card and still apply the club level upgrade? Or must room be booked/paid using Ritz Carlton card?

I suppose you could try to use another card when checking out. You have already enjoyed the Club Level, so arguably all they might do is insist on your using the correct card.

does anyone here have Ritz, Amex Plat and SPG cards?
Is there a reason i should be using Ritz card to pay for anything?
for Ritz/Marriott/SPG: 2 SPG/$ = 6 Ritz/MR > 5x with Ritz
Amex Plat = SPG Gold > Matched to Ritz Gold, so it is not necessary to spend $10k to maintain gold.

- Which benefit of the card would make me eligible for an upgrade (does not have to be club level room) - the gold status or one of the club level upgrade options? If a club level room upgrade is not possible, would I get a non-club room upgrade? Club level upgrades fairly easy to get?
- trying to decide to pull the trigger on this card now or wait for a more lucrative offer

This is my dilemma as well as I contemplate applying for both. AMEX plat gets you hilton, spg>marriott>ritz gold and Ritz gets you Ritz gold and maybe an upgrade to a club level room. Otherwise, I understand that gold ritz does not get you very far (not even a guaranteed upgrade like some of the other hotel gold statuses).
Does a (possible) upgrade at Ritz room or club level upgrade outweigh the FHR selection and accompanying (possible) free nights/upgrades?
Other Random questions
- are club level rooms upgraded rooms or are they typically a mix of "standard" rooms, deluxe rooms and suites?

Right but what about "regular" upgrades? How often do those happen with gold status?
And TBH, I'd even contemplate offering up one of those certificates for a regular upgrade if a clubby level room upgrade is not avaiblabe. DOnt know if that's even possible, though.
