Archived: Applying for Chase Credit Cards- May 2015- Jan 2017

My spouse applied for the Sapphire got a pending review. Called two different reconsideration lines in the wiki and was told too many applications within 2 years and not just counting Chase cards. She said 4 in not even 2 years. is this pretty common? Both calls on the reconsideration lines said the same thing even after I reduced the credit line on two cards by a total of about $12,000.

Same just happened to me. Called up and they said that I had opened too many new credit cards in the last two years - they said 5 or more in the last 2 years is too many.

How many Chase cards do you have, how old are they, and how much usage have you put on them?

This is either something all new, or just Chase seeing you not using the cards they already gave you.

Well, considering that Barclay, known for being stringent on approvals and who pulls from the same CB, gave me instant approval (even after getting one of their cards 3.5 months ago), and Chase, who is historically much easier for me, did not, yes, it rather leaves me wondering.

any updates on applying shortly after closing same card?

Two many opened credit cards in the last two years

Just applied for a CHASE Sapphire Preferred last night for my wife, but was not auto-approved. We called the recon line and was told the app was declined because she had too many credit cards opened in the last two years. They counted six cards (actually they mentioned the number 6, but rattled off more than that when I questioned them about it for details) - a chase united card, a Barclay US Air card, a Talbots card, an Old Navy card plus a several cards that were opened in my name and I made her an authorized user on them. Based on recent reports, it does not sound good about getting them to change their mind if I call back again . . .

Wife applied for Chase Sapphire yesterday and at the same time Barclays Wyndham and Citi AA Plat. Instant approval for Barclays and Citi, but pending for Chase. Wife called reconsideration line expecting simple move of credit (only one open card with limit of 25k), like many times before. Said too many inquiries within two years - have not applied anywhere for six months, and total of 13 inquiries in 24 months (including all applications Chase and other). She typically applies for 1-2 cards every three months, but waited six months this time. She did have the Sapphire before but well over two years ago. Applied and approved six months ago for Chase Southwest. Chase seems to have definitely changed their standards as she has a long record with Chase and has only requested about 2 cards/year from them.

By now I think we have enough data points to say the Chase we knew is dead. The new Chase seems more in line with US Bank.

Now the question is, is the non-intervention, "let it run its course" way more favorable than recon (which has been the case for Chase Biz cards for a while)? Certainly it seems the new recon is a big no no for any serious churner.

Not something I heard before. I've seen lots of advice of HUCA with Chase, but nothing about new reasons to call. Usually just call again hoping to get a more receptive CSR.
The 3rd CSR saw my previous calls.

Not dead, but materially more tight-fisted, at least on business card applications.

Hard to say. After years of smooth sailing, I've been denied twice in the past ~8 months, both times for Chase biz cards. The first time I called in & was denied for "business too new" after being grilled; this week, I got the dreaded ding letter after biding my time on an app from early May. (I did have a successful biz app in March, which appears to have weighed heavily against my latest app if the denial letter is to be believed.)

they are much tougher now. Cited too many cards opened in 24 mos. No budge. Very good at reading people. I feel this has to be a policy change against churning.

In other news...friend applied got pending and did not call recon. They have same amount of cards opened and found approval in snail mail.

No, waiting did not help in our case. I mentioned a couple weeks ago waiting out an app for my wife. The decline letter came back with the same reasons being listed.

She got two Southwest cards in Dec/Jan. Maybe a total of 4-6 apps in the past 6 months. I did mess up in hindsight, this Chase app was part of an AOR, in which other apps were already made. I'm sure Chase saw those.

Now I'm wondering how we're going to renew our SW companion passes in a couple of years.

That's old news though. Biz has been like that for a while. Personal tightening seems very recent. It wasn't that long ago when I was getting 2 Chase cards every 4-5 months. I would apply 2 in a day to merge into one pull. Sometimes had to call for 2nd approval but always easily done by moving CL. Now we get this crap about having 13 cards in 2 years is unacceptable.

I realize YMMV, but that hasn't been our recent experience. In the past year, my DW has been approved for
  • Ink Plus
  • Marriott biz
  • Marriott personal, and
  • IHG personal
This week, she was instantly approved for the BA Visa. Like me, she churns pretty regularly: by my count, she opened 16 cards in the last 2 years.

I'm not denying that others may be having a different experience. I would, however, venture an opinion that Chase hasn't tightened up on personal cards for everyone.

Same here: DW and I both approved for Brit Air in Jan, and United in May. Way too many cards issued in last 24 months to even count. The last time wasn't instant, and I don't think we even got app IDs. But when we decided to call in anyway, all we had to do was go thru a silly grilling by a "Validation Specialist", apparently to make sure we are who we say we are. Then quickly approved without any other questions.

I'm wondering if the folks who are reporting denial for "too many new accounts" have been putting spend on their open Chase accounts. Starting a bit under a year ago, I started making sure we spend on every open Chase and Barclays card every month. More on the more useful cards of course, but at least a couple hundred on every card every month.

I have no idea, but I'm wondering if "too many new accounts" is Chase speak for 'why should we give you bonus points when you don't spend on our cards'?
