If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

These shutdown threads have been pretty quiet lately Am I the first of a new wave of shutdowns?
I don't know much since all the relevant departments are closed for the weekend. It's been like 8 months since my last chase card. No egregious (IMHO) amounts of MS (but nonzero, all those OM/OD deals were too much to resist).

How many new cards in the last 6/12/24 months? Chase and non-Chase?

How many cards you have with Chase?

How old are your Ink Plus / Cash cards?

What were the activities on your Ink Plus / Ink Cash cards on those OM/OD purchases? i.e. the utilization in the billing cycle, did you cycle the CLs?

On top of that have you opened new cards in the past 6 - 12 months with other issuers?

Like all other issuers these days, Chase does frequent account reviews on existing accounts - if there are somethings that tripped the wire, then a human review followed.

Thanks for reporting back with more details, though I doubt you can find out any specifics from the call to Chase on Monday. They never tell you the specifics but cited they can close accounts at will anytime as it is permitted in the T&Cs. At least you do not lose your UR pts.

Well, as predicted, I didn't get much out of Chase on the phone. At best, I got told (as expected), "a letter is coming", at worst bounced from one dept. to another to a supervisor and being told nothing, to one rep who said she couldn't see anything in my account. So I guess I wait for the letter.

I guess I'm here to say if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone (who's trying at all).

No shady stuff with UR (I've been saving up and haven't even redeemed any for a couple years).
I've been a Chase customer for a very long time (off & on for prob. 25 years). How long have they been issuing United cards?
Never deposited a MO to a Chase acct.
Never cycled a CL.
No Chase mortgage.
Never used WM Bill pay.
High FICO score, always paid Chase (& others) on time in full.
Last Chase card was over 8 mo. ago. 6 open. I think 6 since then from other banks. About 18/24, and have been over 5/24 continuously for a few years.
That's high compared to the general public, but not outrageous for here.

For the more cynical among us, I did recently cross 500k UR across personal and business. (Again, I've been saving up for a redemption.) Maybe high balances do prompt a review?

I did max out the 5x category on a Cash for 2018, but that was done by Nov, so I don't think that's it. They never seemed to care, and, I think they do not, by itself.

I think what did me in was letting my CSP (my highest CL card with them) post with about 60% of its limit 6 months in a row.(paid in full each month). I mean, they were fine with it for a couple months, so I figured I was good to go. But apparently something made someone look at my account and they didn't like what they saw.

I do have multiple checking accounts and have used more than one of them to pay off Chase cards, It's possible that's what triggered a review.

That's about all I want to say for now until I get my letter. Maybe I can post more in a couple weeks.

I'm still sort of surprised to be the first shutdown report here or reddit for many months. I guess my number was up. They are still looking!

I also found my Chase cards closed on Saturday. Not a good timing as I traveled to Thailand the day after. I have a checking and a savings account also which are not affected.
Tried with secure message but got a response that it's with the fraud dept and got a phone they wanted me to call during US office hours. Unfortunately that is something I can't do so I'll just wait until back in the us in a week to call them. I'll get back with more info when I have more to share.

Theres no way Chase closed your accounts because you used 60% of your credit limit and then paid it off.

Maybe it was that plus 18/24?

I mean, opening 18 credit card accounts in 2 years is extraordinary. Yes, other people have done it, and it might even be common among a small group of FTers. But combined with anything else that looks suspicious, it might cross a threshold.

Theres often more to the shutdown stories than get posted here, but of the items mentioned, the 18/24 is far, far more likely to have caused the shutdown than using 60% of the CL and then paying it in full. Banks want people using the CL, or else theyd reduce it.

I think in your case they shut your account down because of a actual/potential fraud issue. Did you use your cards overseas?

It would be interesting to see what the letter states for the reasons for the closure.

My gut says 18/24 was the main reason. Questions, How many card accounts have you opened since you opened your last Chase Account? Of the 18 accounts you opened in the last 24 months, how many were opened in the last 6 months to a year?

How much was your CSP CL? And what is your stated income? During the 6 months in a row, what % of income did you charge across all cards?

I would not be so sure about that. While not Chase, Barclays definitely isn't so considerate.

No, banks do not want you to use up your large CL on a constant basis, even if you pay in full every statement cycle.

Banks dont treat all CLs, size big or small, equally. It is all about risk models.

While the banks extend CLs, they definitely dont want you to use a good portion of it month after month, if the CL is a sizable amount. Ironically they dont care much if it is only a few thousands even you cycle it - because high CLs mean high exposure on the risk scale, far more so than a below 5K CL.

Agree.

In the last couple years, yes, this can be a factor especially coupled with high utilization ratio on a high CL. It can be viewed the cardholder is in some sort of desperate need for unsecured credit.

My feeling is, OP has summed up the most likely factors that led to the eventual closure, except the 500K UR balance. Given Chase has several billions worth of outstanding UR pts, I doubt 500K would be a factor as this is just $5K, a drop in the billions bucket. OP also said he has been saving the UR pts so 500K over several years is not unusual.

Over 30 to 40% utilization of a large CL month after month even the balance is paid off on time never incur any late payment or interest charges, would still be a red flag to trip wire. Others may disagree but this is the model I would go by.
In fact I suspect if the outstanding is paid down midcycle, but never cause recycling of the CL, may prevent the account being flagged versus letting the statement closed at 60% utilization, for months on end.
