If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:
CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

Went to read the write up you referred to.

What is standing out in the comment section is many got their accounts reinstated after filing CFPB. One case was so bizarre that the CSR from the lending dept actually yelled and cursed at the caller - that was reviewed on the CFPB complaint as we all know, the phone calls with lending / dispute / fraud dept are all recorded.
Another poster got shutdown TWICE - the first one he called and did not go anywhere so he filed CFPB. All accounts were reinstated. Then got shut down again. This time he did not even bother to call, filed CFPB immediately. 3 days later all accounts were reinstated BEFORE the official shut down letter even arrived!

Seems Chase procedure is very haphazard and lots of "Kill first" actions which do not stand up on regulatory investigation.

Here is a thread in Dan's Deal Forum - Note large amount 3rd partycheck deposited via ATM is also a No No.

Thanks for your read up and posting.

Coincidentally DH had the following happen:

Approx. 4 weeks ago DH received $300 sign-up offer for Chase checking account in company mail, addressed to his own company.
Thought: why not - cancel the current company account with different bank and earn $300 with Chase, a reputable bank.
Went into local branch and the manager happily signed up.
First time ever for the company, although we have a personal Chase Trust account but no other accounts with Chase.
Yesterday - approximately one month after 1st deposit of a couple of thousands into the account, hardly paying attention and with no other activity, THE LETTER arrived.
Boom ... account closed - no reason given.
DH - flabbergasted as can be - visits local branch and shows the letter.
Manager states: "it happens" and doesn't seem too surprised.

So what was the eventual outcome? Did the manager worked to reinstate the account?

Note that the previous account has to be closed longer than 90 days prior opening a new one for sign up bonus. It is in the term.

We do the Saving account bonus every year. The previous accounts always close close to 5-6 months prior to open a new one.

EDIT
Just re-read your post - this is the first time the company opens an account with Chase in the company's name...

You seem to forget this is FlyerTalk, which is primarily a forum for frequent travelers.

Many of us earn miles by actual flying. In the past, it was easier to get miles from flying rather than from credit cards.

He declared there was nothing he could do.

No previous history with Chase whatsoever.

The manager does not want to keep your business? (the company account with other bank is closed and replaced with the new Chase Business Checking account).

Does it affect your existing Chase Trust Account? If it does not, do you still want to keep it at Chase, given what the bank has done to you and how unhelpful the banker has been...

I guess if your husband decides to pursuit the matter, the account probably would be reinstated. Chase may have pulled a D&B report or whatever, (ARS and some other obscure outfits, but that is more for personal) and somehow it does not like the info. Or, there might be a mix up of companies. That indeed happens, not just Chase, but AMEX has had ID mix up closures reported in the past.

Apparently so, did not seem interested.

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

I guess the idea of an appeal with CFPB and thus pursue the matter seems feasible, even if just out of curiosity what the outcome will be.
But I'm positive the bonus will be gone, even with a positive result.

Regarding the Chase Trust account - we will evaluate again after this mishap and if it's worth the time and effort to move everything to another bank.
Feel sorry for DH, since he did not need the extra hassle of having everything moved to the newly opened Chase company account and then having it involuntarily closed within a month.

The shutdown just seems very puzzling and bizarre. Chase does shut down business account if the bank decides it does not like the business the client is in. This has been reported a few years ago - a poster had multiple business accounts with Chase, one of them belonged to a "crowd funding" venture. Chase decided it did not like the nature of the business and shut down that account, all other accounts remained intact. It was reported in one of the early Chase shut down threads. Try search 300K Ultimate Reward Points gone some keywords like that, you might be able to unearth that thread.

Just got the closure letter in the mail. The letter for my wife said "After careful consideration, we closed your account... because our affiliate is ending its banking relationship with you."

I don't understand who the affiliate is. It is a Chase card. We have no checking or savings accounts open at Chase. The doesn't make sense to me. I found another copy someone posted online that said they deemed their account "too risky." That at least makes sense (even if it isn't justified). Maybe this is just another way of saying the default unsatisfactory past relationships.

I will have her call tomorrow. She is going to be so happy....

And in reference to some other comments. Even though I don't plan to MS, I would like to have the ability to earn United, Hyatt, Southwest, Marriott, BA, Korean, etc... through my regular spend.

Also, when I referenced "she seemed to think" I was referring to the chase representative on the phone.

Will report back how the phone call goes and if any progress is made. Wish us luck!

Ha ha ... none of this is applicable to DH's business.
The biz with the closed Chase account is remarkably straight forward: manufacture & installation of solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations across the globe.
Business is booming !

May be Chase does not want to do business with an internationally based operation due to the inevitably compliance requirement that entails. (international wire transfer, to name a basic activity). In the general 2015/2016 shut down threads (in the MS forum) someone reported his account was shut down after he had a few overseas transfers in and out - for his business needs - but Chase shut the aco.... down after a few months.
Otherwise there would be no more logical reason.

Just happened today.

Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name? NO
Did you sell UR points to someone? NO
Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months? ~80+%
Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards? Yes - United, several months ago
Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards? Yes, only have credit cards
Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks? - No, maybe 30% more
Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? Only Mortgage in last 2 months, no cards for over a year ("Many" may be hard to define.)
If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any? - ~10K?
Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months? No
Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit? No
Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year? 40%
How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any? None

Imho with Chase sometimes it's hard to pick out one item for closure.
#3 80% in 5X's points could be a problem?
#4 Having a card closed can be a red flag but sometimes it's nothing.
#7 With Chase again it varies. They are known to do soft pulls to see if you are opening cards even if you're not applying for more Chase cards.
#8 MO's into a Chase account is a bad idea. If it was 10K a month that could bring a review. $120K a year is high. Also it shows MS. May require a report to the Federal Gov.?

With Chase it's hard to pin point why they do a shut down. In your case it might be a combination of things. Did something happen that they would look at every thing? Usually a shut down like yours happens after a internal review.

Good luck

jj summed it up pretty well. #3 could be a problem if it was on Ink cards. #8 pretty much killed you. At this point it is well documented that MO into chase does not go unpunished.

For those who got shutdown for transfering UR to someone not in their immediate household or address, did the person receiving also get shutdown? Any data points on this?
