If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

I recently wrote a letter to investor relations since I am a shareholder. Actually I bought 10 shares thinking it may force them to at least response to me after getting an "unsatisfactory relationship" shutdown almost two years ago. I have no applied for any Chase products since then.

Anyway, a rep from the executive office emailed me and asked me to call him. When I called all he said was that I am welcome to apply for any Chase products at any point in time. When I asked if that meant that there was no reason from his end that I would not be approved, he said he could not say that. Perhaps I will apply on the actual two year anniversary of the shutdown. Is the Ritz Carlton Card the play here?

WOW, a whole 10 shares...I bet they were amazed at your huge investment and that is why you got a nonsense answer that means nothing. Anyone is welcome to apply for a Chase card, even a 3 year old from Lesotho could submit an application. You did give me a good laugh though, so I thank you for that

Thank you very much sir...does the coverted honor come with a medal or trophy? I would truly cherish it dearly. I was a little sad though since I have to share the glory with TMM1982

I've won the RNE award in the past, does this mean I have to pass something along to the new winners?

That is one of the nasty parts of this blacklisting problem: Chase keeps saying that you could apply again. When you apply they do a hard pull. Afterwards they they close the new account because closing is not based on your credit--which may be excellent.

Account cloned / closed / $100k Spend ... Chase?

Have been a Chase Milage Plus customer since 2007.

Average spend on the card since 2010 is around $100k per year.

Since 2013 my account has been cloned, or hacked, four times. Each time, I have been issued a new card and account number. In every case, I never once lost my card, someone, somehow just started charging crap to my account.

The new account number is a major pain for me - I have nearly 35 accounts (things like rental cars, hotel programs, airline programs, newspaper subscriptions, etc) that are tied to my Chase card, and switching all these over is a 3-4 hour process, and for which is really annoying to do for several times over three years.

So today I learn my account was again hacked for a 4th time.

So I asked that my account annual fee be credited, and I was given the run around. I said that would close the account if nothing could be done. The conversation was 30+ minutes long, and still going when my cell phone dropped the call.

I did not feel like calling back and wasting more time (and having the call drop again) so I send Chase an email explaining the situation, and they write back telling me my account is now closed and there is nothing that can be done.

Wow, any advice on how to follow back up and clean this mess up?

I fly United 50-75k per year, and I wish to keep my programs with them, but this has been a total disaster and time suck. I would think my $100,000k per year spend is worth something to them...though I do pay it down every month and do not carry a balance and have never missed a payment.

One of these 35 accounts may be the problem.

Sounds like they did as you requested. You cannot complain about that.

Time for a new credit card company

You're going to need to call and reinstate the account of you want to keep it.

And then blame the U.S. banking industry for not caring about fraud.

Nah, lots of different user names and passwords, that is what makes changing all the linked accounts so hard!

Thanks for the feedback, and like one of you said, really its time for a new card. With a high spend threshold, its hard to not take it all in miles though!

Do you have reason/evidence to believe Chase was the source of leaks of your credit card data? If yes you should complain thru proper channels, that and your efforts to update CC with various merchants have little to do with whether the bank extends a retention offer. A front line (regular) bank employee answering retention calls probably can only offer whatever is available on your file determined by their computer system. To that end it would likely be a waste of time to attempt a debate with a representative about your spending's worthiness/entitlement. You might want check the thread on Chase retention offers before you actually make the call. When you do call, speak politely and ask whether there is any retention offer; if none say something like please leave the account open as you would like to mull it over, thank him/her for their time and hang up.

As your credit card is already closed, you’ll need call to reinstate it if you want it reopened – be humble and admit that was a mistake or at least claim it was a misunderstanding. On the other hand, since you fly a lot with UA and spend substantial amount on the credit card(s), you might want consider whether to apply the UA club card (it comes with airport lounge membership, 1.5x earn rate on everything and no closed-in booking fee for award travel). Before you pull the trigger check if there is an 1st year no-fee offer (to elites).

Nevertheless there are many great CCs from other banks, so diversifying to other programs/points for CC spending might turn out to be healthy.
