If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

Like someone said earlier it could be 10-15 years. Probably not, but at least 1 year. They will look at how many other CC's you are opening during that year. I would say 1+ year if no other inquiries and spend goes along with income. They do look at MS and say this guy is charging 5K a month but only takes home 3-4 K after taxes. Now you're a high risk and maybe that's what happened? Your short credit history also hurt you, my bet is if it was 10-20 yrs nothing would have happened.
Both Chase and Amex will do soft pulls every few months to keep a eye on there investment.

No one knows "how long". Just keep working on your credit history and try again in 1 or 2 years.

Sounds like Chase made a mistake somewhere.

Not enough credit information on file? If that were true, they wouldn't have approved the cards.

Too many requests for credit? Now that is a new one for cause to close a previously opened account. Normally if they had severe credit concerns they would just reduce the credit lines.

Personally, I'd send a little note to the Chase EO...
Not sure how you're going to explain the MS'ing if it comes up.

This is true and all else is speculation. Only Chase or someone who works in their financial knows what the rules are. The answers you get here are from others who have read or experianced something similar. But everyones experiances are unique and have different backgrounds. So good luck and as they say YMMV.

But remember he opened 3-4 other accounts after the Chase accounts. With little credit history Both Chase and Amex do soft pulls every few months and someone got nervous and decided there was a pattern they didn't like? It might have been the BA card that he opened after the other companies that caused Chase to look at him? I don't think anybody knows and I don't know why they approved the BA card just before shutdown? He's still trying to get back his $95 fee. Maybe it was MS on the BA card?

Rule of Thumb for Office Supply Store Purchases?

I want to stay under the recommended ceiling for 5x spend, since some folks report being shut down for $5K+ per month. I have multiple Ink cards, however, so would that be $5K per card, if 1x spending is mixed in at 80%+ of 5x spend, I'm well under the CL, and make only one payment per month?

The teller asked me if I had any relationship with the bank and I almost blurted out we were estranged.
Last time I step into a Chase branch....until my divorce is final lol.
Now Chase is refusing cash? They are still a bank, right?

Unless it was a large deposit, which does set off bells, a small deposit should be no problem.

Chase requires personal ID to verify who you are when depositing cash. New policy. Notice is sent couple months ago.

there is no rules and no one knows exactly what triggered their shutdowns, just some conjecture. However, there is a max of 50k spend per year per card so no real need to spend more than ~4.2k per month

Well, i got my 50k signup bonus still even though the account closed. They told me to get my $95 annual fee back I need to wait 1 or 2 statement periods. Will the points get refunded if I ask for the money back?

Well, OP spiked up his MS and probably spent $5k or $3k in the first month at CVS, then spent a couple hundred $.. people doing MS know that it is shady and although not illegal, what Chase did here is shady and not illegal as well. You pushed it to get points without actually buying anything and now you have to take responsibility for your actions.

Chase and other credit card issuers are looking for spend patterns and credit requests that fit the profile of a person scrambling for funds before defaulting. A huge red flag is applying for lots of credit, like we do, because many people who are spread too thin will use credit cards as a quick and easy fix to pay bills and buy them some time. Add MS to that mix, if indeed they did or do, and you have a profile that appears as a headlong gallop into debt or bankruptcy, using Chase as the piggy bank.
