If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

When it comes to shutdowns, Chase doesn’t care about your credit score or income.

The average American has two credit cards, total. Six from one issuer within 10 months is beyond aggressive.

The official reason on my shutdown letter was "rewards misuse".

They wouldn't tell me any more details about the shutdown reason, so I'm left with my speculation: It was probably the 6 mo. of high spend on my CSP,
particularly what I was buying. What was I buying? Well, with a nod to AlohaDaveKennedy and his obfuscations: I needed to get on my roof. And no I'm not going to tell you where I was buying that. Find your own damn unicorn shutdown trigger.

Lessons learned: I probably shouldn't have done that much spending on one card consecutively. No reason I couldn't use other bank's cards some months, which is what I'll do now.
Second: In jan., I did split the payoff of my balance between 2 different checking accounts. I was shutdown shortly after. Churning lore says that may have been a contributing factor in putting eyes on my account.
Third: An outside chance that crossing a big UR balance threshold causes some cursory review.

I'm going to miss my Ink Cash for its 5x during the OD/OM promos the most. That was a nice 125k UR/year at no cost except a little running around. Though losing the annual IHG and Hyatt free nights stings a little, too. Due to being way over 5/24, I wouldn't have been opening any new cards with them anyway. Now I have another reason to not worry about 5/24.
I wonder if the bolded part is what they considered "misuse" of the rewards. They pay 5x UR/$ on $25k in spend a year at office supply stores, and on internet, cable, and phone services. Did you spend, oh I don't know, exactly $25k, then shut down spending on the card entirely? Because I'll bet that most businesses that put spend on the card don't do that, they just spend as much as they need, and they don't go out of their way to buy gift cards or other types of stuff at office supply stores just to max out the bonuses.

I think it's likely that their shutdown reviews look at the total profitability of a customer. If you spend a lot on non bonus categories, they love you. If you do a lot of 3X spend on the CSR, they don't love you as much, but they'll keep you around, especially if you also do some non bonus spend on the CSR or have other Chase cards on which you do non bonus spend. Then, there are the people who get cards like the Freedom/Ink and go out of their way to max out the 5X categories every quarter or year, then shut down spending on the card until the next time they can get 5X. If that's like 70%+ of your entire spend across Chase cards, that sounds like a great way to get booted.

Question: was this "high spend" on your CSR card 3X or 1X spend? I'm curious.

800+ credit, good income, have proactively reduced credit lines after each approval to current $30K total across five existing Chase cards. Really want the Explorer biz card 75K bonus before it goes away mid March. Plan would be to lay low on Chase after that for at least 4-5 months.

Thanks much.
I would say you know the answer since you asked the question. You are PRIME for a shutdown.

Writing to share a data point about successfully keeping my accounts after my Hyatt card was placed under review (the process that takes up to 10 calendar days).

After hearing about being placed under review, I paid down the full statement balance on my Hyatt card ($7k, out of $60k+ credit limit) and moved $50k into my Chase checking account via ACH transfer from another US bank. My logic was to demonstrate that I posed no lending risk. That was before I read the cautionary advice about not making large deposits into Chase checking accounts... Regardless, my account was released from the review process and is now back to normal after 6 calendar days.

CSP spend was just 1X I did go over the $25k on the ink a little. (maybe another $1-2000). But yeah, it's very possible that's what they didn't like.

I regularly make 6 figures deposits and withdrawals to.from my chase checking and nary a problem. Cautionary advice is a myth

Its common knowledge that Chase doesnt like cash deposits. The advice about large non-cash deposits is obviously wrong.

Planning ahead....as Chase 5/24 clears soon.

Proceed w/Chase or let-it-ride?
Close to 1.5 years ago we got caught in 'eyes-on-the-account' & financial review when we applied for our WoH card. While we do little in the way of MS, we did use Chase for some MS on a particular promotion in the same quarter, and combined resulted in a Chase shut-down. Contacted Chase to discuss and Chase reopened everything and the past year has been great. No MS wChase, btw, since. Now that the 5/24 window will be lifting, we'd obviously be interested in another Chase card before moving to other providers. Think it will be fine to apply, or don't poke-the-bear and let it ride? We do value and prioritize our Chase relationship over other providers.

We also have a number of Chase cards;
• Personal: Freedom, Freedom Unlimited, Sapphire Reserve, World of Hyatt.
• Business: Ink Preferred, Ink Cash (downgraded from another card), Ink Cash 2 (downgraded from another card), Marriott Premier.

The two Ink Cash cards are nearly identical and we can let one go.

You had this post in the proper thread, why post twice?

@mhdena,

Post was considered too broad so I deleted and broke them into more smaller more specific topics.

Trying to get a sense of risk to pursue another Chase card. There are still one or two Chase cards that would be useful to our spending patterns.
