If you feel your account has been unfairly closed, consider filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau:

CFPB's complaint form: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year?
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any?
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase?
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?

It was Chase who closed my accounts - that's why I posted in this thread. After shutdown I got again Chase cards, but somehow (according to the letter) Chase still thinks I have Ritz card, that's why they denied me for it.

first, because no 5/24 requirements. Then $300 air credit, 2 nights at RC. But, you are right, I don't want to put my other cards at risk.

My oldest card (freedom) is almost 7 years old and all other other all almost 2 years old (except for 2 new SW cards).
When spending on my new SW card, I got fraud alert, I called Chase 2 times to get that cleared. I believe that may have triggered the review. Here are further details:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name?- NO
  2. Did you sell UR points to someone?- NO
  3. Approximately what percentage of your charges earned less than 5x points in the past 12 months?- 30-40%
  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards?- NO
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards?- NO (not more than 20%)
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks?- Its definitely higher than other banks
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.) - 2 Chase Cards
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any?- No
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months?- No
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit?- for 1-2 months it might have happened with Chase Ink but chase increased the limit on that.
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year? - 50% (Only on Ink), no MS on any other cards.
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any? - Don't do BP
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase? - Checking and Saving account
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score?- No
I was not able to speak with security team today as they closes at 7PM, I will tomorrow. But given the profile is there any chance of my account being re-instated. TIA.
Did Chase reopen your accounts eventually?

I always carried a relatively low balance compared to credit line and paid my balance on time, if not early. I have never done any shady spends, and I don't believe in churning card thereby hurting credit card companies.

Note that, I did, however, make a rookie mistake by applying for the Marriott card within a month of having my IHG approved--needless to say, my tertiary card application was denied on the grounds of having "too many apps with a 30-day period". (In retrospect, my applying for a tertiary Chase card within a relatively short period of time and calling the reconsideration line might have triggered the following

About a day or two after my phone convo regarding my Marriott application (probably exactly a week ago by now), I put in a travel notice for my week-long European trip, only to have been placed on a "Periodic Review" the same evening. About three days ago I found out through the online portal that for both of my existing CC accounts:

As of right now, I haven't recieved a phone call or anything in writing from Chase. All I see is the above message through the online portal.

This is beyond frustrating, as I believe that I've been nothing but a good customer (700+ score across the board) to Chase, and see no reason other than the risk of having too many applications within a short period (a decision I now regret, of course! )

I was happy to read that some fellow flyers here found success in having their cases reevaluated and accounts reinstated. I was wondering if you could provide insights as to whom I should reach out directly (what is the best EO number? Is it (800) 242-7399?) and what the best strategy that I should employ would be to go about having my case reviewed and escalated?

Thanks in advance!

TL, DR:

When someone reports an account closure here, a lot of the same questions get asked. It might be useful to answer some questions in advance. This could help figure out what happened or how to proceed:
  1. Did you transfer UR points to someone with a different address? Different last name? No

  4. Did a Chase or non-Chase bank recently close one of your credit cards? No
  5. Are you using up a large percentage of your credit line on all Chase and non-Chase credit cards? No? (30% Max.)
  6. Is your total credit line with Chase much higher than with other banks? Yes (my only other credit card account is with a major US bank; 3k limit, very good history)
  7. Did you apply for many credit cards or other forms of credit in the past 2 months? ("Many" may be hard to define.) 3 in total; first two approved (2nd card approved almost instantly)
  8. If you have a Chase checking account how much did you typically deposit in money orders per month, if any? JUST opened my checking AND savings accounts with Chase, in person, and with intentions to 1) take advantage of the $500 bonus and 2) to start a Private Client relations (this was all 1.5-2 weeks before account closure/rejection of 3rd card.)
  9. Did you recently start spending a lot more with Chase than in typical months? No
  10. Is your monthly balance frequently close to your credit limit? No, never
  11. Approximately what percentage of spending was on gift cards this year? 15%. All was for legitimate personal use and via MileagePlusX
  12. How much of your bill do you typically pay using WM or KMart bill payment if any? Never
  13. Do you have a Chase mortgage or other account that might be profitable to Chase? No
  14. Has your credit score or credit profile changed recently? As in: significantly more debt, more open credit lines, or a large drop in your credit score? No

My hunch is that the quick succession of applications combined with my relatively short credit history triggered this "periodic review" and the subsequent closures of accounts. I hope that no one else will make the same mistake that I did
3 months after my saga (with a happy ending eventually), I am considering applying for the Ritz-Carlton card for its airfare discount and free AU benefits, among many others. However, the last thing I want is having to go through another round of shutdown (although I'd argue that my accounts were wrongfully closed last time). Do you think enough time has passed? I'd really appreciate any advice!

It depends on how long is your credit history with all creditors, and how long is your credit history with Chase (i.e. how your payment records in their system). There is no cut and dry rules, all depending whether your accounts would trip wire in the bank's risk assessment algorithm and then the human who reviews the system action. From your previous posts it seems you do not have a "thick" credit profile, i.e. not enough demonstrated payment history with multiple banks, and a new customer to Chase.

You should have known by now that getting Multiple Chase cards within a 6 to 9 months is a risky approach in current environment, especially for those who are new to Chase. Even in the past this is never a good idea as shut down could come a few months after opening multiple Chase cards in a year.
The things that many dont understand is, the card approval process is independent from the account review process - or the reverse is true that the reviewers do not care about how you are being approved for a new Chase card whether by the system (instant approved) or by a recon call. Once your accounts are being flagged, then it is up to the analyst who review the shut down to make a decision on how the final outcome might be.

Based on the above you can assess whether you want to take the risk to get another Chase card just a few months after the initial shutdown albeit it was wrongly done (presumably the system shut them down due to some flags raised.) Do you feel lucky? It is the question you should ask yourself.

My partner just had all of his Chase accounts shut down a few days ago. The only thing that was done ,IMO, to cause it was reducing a recently opened Ritz Carlton cc credit line to $1500. Apparently a letter is on it's way to explain the details of the shutdown. Replies to secure messages were vague and nothing was revealed. He held only a few fee free cards with Chase and no MS or large amount of UR points. Just bad luck or? Comments?

The letter will likely be as vague as the SMs but if this is truly the reason, I say "Bravo Chase." How many non-Chase cards has your partner opened in the last 24 months?

Serious question: why would reducing a credit line on a specific card cause the bank to close all the credit cards?

This particular CL reduction is a clear attempt to circumvent paying the Ritz card's annual fee.

And there's your answer. The attempt to "game the system" by reducing the annual fee to a level that prevents Chase from charging the card's annual fee.

"The CARD Act and implementing regulations provide that an issuer may not require consumers to pay fees (other than penalty fees) during the first year in which an account is opened which exceed 25% of the total initial credit line."

You don't do that on a new card. You have 1 year, why rush it?

The AF isn’t waived first year. They’re obviously trying to get the AF waived or refunded.

What was your partner's #/24 status (# of new accounts in past 24 months) and hard pulls in the last 6 months when they opened the Ritz card? AAoA and credit utilization ratio (for all accounts even non-Chase) would be helpful too so we can assess.
