AA E-giftcards in the amount of $150 & $25 (figured they might look like seat upgrade and baggage charge). SM'd and was asked for proof of the charges being related to an allowable expense.
I'll try calling, but I'm thinking that they would probably have noted the account.

Called and cancelled the card before AF charge, no questions asked.Seems they closed pretty much all of the gift card loop holes to use the $300 credit. It was good ride with 140k points + $600 credit - $395 fee + some bonus points from Marriott stays.

I'm traveling next month to Hawaii. Flying Hawaiian Airlines in-land and I believe the luggage fee is $17 one-way. There's 4 of us traveling, so I'll have to pay the fee 8 times, totaling $136.
I guess I'll use my $300 credit to pay for some of that. I figured I'll then visit some airline lounges during our layovers to use the remaining $164 credit.
Otherwise if Hawaiian Airlines offers First Class upgrade at check-in for $50, I'll just do that. The total will be $400 round-trip, so I'll essentially pay $100 round-trip to upgrade all 4 of us after applying my annual $300 credit.
I know Hawaiian Airlines is kind of pointless for First Class, especially when it's in-land. However, I'm cancelling the card in March, so I have no other use for the $300 credit after our Hawaii trip in January.

Agree. Feel like it would be a ridiculous card to apply for now even if the 140k point offer was to come back later this month.

So, I had the RC card and got the MR/RC gold status that comes with it. Spent over $10K on it that would extend the gold status another year, but I did close the card afterwards (a good 6 months after hitting that $10K). Logged into Marriott, looks like they recently downgraded me to silver, when I Should have gold for another 8 months or so. Is this because I cancelled the card? Thought gold would extend for another year regardless..?
As another data point, used the credit for SWA gc and got them reimbursed.

It seems folks are still having success with AA gift cards in smaller amounts.

In January, I am planning on purchasing a $200 gift card and leaving the rest for actual incidentals.
I plan to do this with American. Their overweight baggage fee can be $200 when you have a bag that is over 71 lbs.
I plan to call to get the reimbursement since SM has not been successful for both me and from posts that I read.
Question: Are AA gift cards still an option today? I see it in the wiki but its been there for some time.

If 140K offer comes back am tempted. This would bump me for one of the nice combo airline hotel awards

Why would you apply for that card today anyway? The 140k points seems to be the only draw to this card to me?

There were multiple reports of people trying to reduce it to 1500, and Chase automatically increasing it to 2-3000. I haven't seen any recent reports either, but it's doubtful Chase would've gone and reopened that loophole since.

My reasons are pretty simple. I am mainly interested in the Marriott gold status. I will be traveling in Asia quite a bit over the next few moths and Marriott Gold members seem to get great treatment/upgrades at Marriott hotels specifically in Asia. I'm not that interested in the points, though I would use the free night certificates. With the AF this card would only make sense to me if I could buy airline gift cards to sell and offset the AF.
