Costa Rica Guanacaste Area & Hotels

I'm looking at a trip to the Guanacaste region. Never been in this area before, wondering if anyone has any input or suggestions.

Also, there are 5 hotels I have seen so far - anyone have any comments for or against any of these?
1) Hotel Riu Guanacaste
2) Hotel Riu Palace
3) Occidental Papagayo
4) Occidental Tamarindo
5) Villas Sol Resort

I see that flights would be into LIR. I'll need to see what transportation options are around as well. I know plenty of transport companies in Mexico but none down here.

Any tips or feedback is much appreciated.

Update: Ended up booking at the Riu Palace.
I can report back in about 2 months with a recap of how it is, if anyone is interested.

Bump....interested in the region as well. Resorts with beautiful grounds, nice pool area, good beach with swimmable water. Can be Mom and Pop does not have to be a crowded Mega resort. Thx!

Likely a higher price point than what is being discussed here, but we were at the Four Seasons CR last month and had a really good stay. FSPP agent got third night free and upgrade confirmed at booking.

Villas Sol: terrible experience. Their booking process is outdated, the food is good, but the menu very limited, they advertise it as All-Inclusive, but it is not. They only offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, so no snacks, nor alcoholic beverages are included. The hotel is near, but not at the beach, you must take their shuttle to go down. I'd stay there again only if I use the promo I got last year ($100/ night 2 PAX), otherwise their regular fare not worth it.
