Best way to get from Managua (MGA) to Liberia (LIR)

What is your best advise on getting from MGA to LIR?

Flying seems to be very expensive because you have to make a connection in GUA, PTY, SJO, etc.....

Why are there no direct flights from MGA to LIR?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the only good air connection from Liberia is to the US. For Managua - Liberia take the road. I made this route having somebody picking me up at the border, but you could also take a bus, however I have no experience with those bus lines. I do know Pulmitan from Liberia to San Jose and while they are not great, there is no reason not to take them.

BUS!

Select Departure from Nicaragua - Managua (Terminal). / Arrival Costa Rica - Liberia (Gasolinera Emesa). They offer both coach and business class. Affordable and they drive FAST!

There are no direct flights because there is no demand, well, other than yours.

I would not take a bus because they are maniacs behind the wheel and the border crossing is interminable.

Fly to SJO and then connect to LIR.

Never visited Nicaragua, but have been in Liberia CR a couple of times.

The last time, the only non-spanish speking guest besides me, asked the concierge about a possible bus ride to Managua. The concierge looked sincerely worried and explicitly described all the possible dangers and hardships a visitor would face doing that trip, and also recommended flying through SJO.

Although the opposite direction you're searching for, but the problems are the same, regardless of direction.

Better safe than sorry
