Actually since the introduction of 840/41, I've noticed 830/31 a little less packed in Y on the days I usually travel so no reason to op-up. Usually when I ask about load factors I'll go for the less-packed one (and seat-guarantee into the lowest class), knowing that that means little to no chance for op-up. But I figure having an empty seat blocked next to me is almost as good.
Banking on op-ups never seemed like a good idea to me, though it would be nice if I received even just one. It's a really long flight!
