CX888 Changes
Just find out they have changed the timings of the CX888/889 flight to YVR and JFK from Oct onwards:
It will now depart HKG at 0055 and arriving at JFK 0550.
I actually liked the old schedule better. But don't know why they do this as the 74A have to sit there for over 12+ hours to wait to come back to HKG as 889 remains at night.
However I think this is in anticipation of all US routes being 77A, on vertain days 888/889 will be on 77A.

Actually, this is very interesting. Several times I flew the late HKG-LAX and then connected to the LAX-JFK AA redeye because it's a very good use of time in that you get a full day in HKG, leave late at night, and effectively arrive early the next morning in New York. You don't waste any "day time" in transit. It's also two redeyes in a row, which for some might be bad, but certainly in J/F that allows for lots of sleep. I've always re-adjusted to the time change fine on this schedule.
So now with 888 doing a 1-stop via YVR on a similar schedule it makes the trip a little less painless, namely no connection in LAX (sometimes the layover is very
long).
Certainly makes more sense than the current 888 that departs HKG mid-afternoon and arrives JFK late at night -- I don't know why anyone would take that over the evening nonstop 840.
Is 889 JFK-YVR-HKG on the same schedule as previously?

I like this schedule too !! I too often connect via LAX red-eye to NYC/east-coast...this new schedule sounds much better, no need to fly AA transcontinental anymore...
on the point about the plane sitting in JFK for 12+ hours...just a very wild thought, but, it doesn't give it enough time to fly JFK-LHR-JFK, right ? or, HKG-JFK-LHR-HKG with one plane and HKG-LHR-JFK-HKG with another ? wish CX would really start JFK-LHR v.v. soon...

The schedule change does make sense to me. When they added the 2nd non-stop flight, they advertised it as a morning (841), afternoon (831), and evening (889) departure. Now with this time change for 888, they have a JFK morning (888), afternoon (830), and evening (840) arrival. The converse appears to work for HKG departure/arrival as well. CX might have planned it this way.

I do because:
1) F and J class is a lot nicer on the 74A than 77A
2) The stop in YVR makes a nice break
3) 2 sets of PJs if you ask
4) More meals
5) Better adjustment to jetlag

Any idea if this change will now enable CX889 to have a consistent departure time year-round from JFK? I always found the summer-time 11pm departures from JFK to be a bit too late for my liking.
