Has anyone recently done a paid upgrade from LAX?

I got a AUS/MNL on CO connecting in HKG to MNL on CX. My CO itinerary indicates that the CX segments are in Y fare bucket.

Can I get some sort of discounted buy up in HKG at arrival or MNL at check-in if there is any J availability?

When I bought the ticket, adding the MNL CX connection cost me $500 usd and putting the CX segments into J would cost me almost $600 more. A CX Y ticket was about $300 usd and J was about $750 usd. My AUS/HKG segments on CO are upgraded to J with OnePass miles.

I want to keep my itinerary on ONE ticket. I do not trust CO enough to not miss the connection, otherwise I would just buy a separate ticket .

I do not look forward to checking in at MNL in coach

If you can check in online, you can queue up on the online checkin line which is always empty at the CX Check in counters in MNL.

Note: the EWR-HKG leg is usually delayed by min. 1 hour due to EWR congestion while HKG-EWR is 99% of the time ontime because the 772ER is stationed in HKG for 12+ hours.

For the MNL leg, you're likely to be flying on the 744, which features new Y with state-of-the-art AVOD (too bad movies are disabled on short flights like this). Enjoy CX

Is it worth asking for the price of a Y->C upgrade (HKG-NRT) at checkin?
Will it be less than the fare difference?
(The fare basis is Y, so I assume it is full fare.)

Usually it's just the fare difference. Not UA or AA where they'll auction off extra J seats at cheaper prices

Has anyone tried paying for an upgrade at LHR for Y > J on CX? I am flying HKG-LHR in J on a redemption and have currently got a single Y ticket to come back on (CX J one-way is the same price, if not more, than a return). Would love to be able to pay for an upgrade at LHR but don't know if it's possible. All advice greatly appreciated.
