YVR - HKG load factors

I was just curious if anyone has flown CX YVR-HKG (or return) recently, and if so what the load factors are like? It seems like one of the more dependable CX routes but I have no idea how COVID has impacted it. Thx!

I am taking HKG-YVR this Friday, 05 Feb. Booked in PEY and wanted to use a Bookable Upgrade, but was rejected. I also had an award booking in J, but has been on waitlist for the past several weeks. At check-in, I plan to use points to upgrade to J, and will see what happens. I doubt the flight can be full.

Returning on 26 Feb. Will report back on loads then.

Are you aware of the new quarantine requirements - 3 days at designated hotel to wait on PCR on arrival test results plus more rigorous monitoring for remaining 14 day self isolation if negative test result. Cost is $2,000+. You will only have 1 week of freedom before flying back to HKG, assuming negative test results. This is in addition to having a negative PCR test prior to departure from HKG.

Airlines realize that the only pax who currently travel are those who "have" to travel.
Hence they try to get expensive fares from them even though flights have light loads. Very few awards.

Regarding quarantine, I was under the impression that the 3-day rule was to be applied "soon". It was more of a deterrent for Canadians not to leave now and return with hotel quarantine. It seems unclear if it will be operational by 5 February.

Regardless of the implementation timing of the new rules, all arrivals are required to self isolate for 14 days, there have been many people caught cheating. You have to provide your isolation plan on arrival.

That means 14 days on arrival and 21 days getting back to HK. No fun for a 21 day trip even if you escape hotel quarantine.

Yes, I am aware of the new travel restrictions announced by Trudeau on 29 Jan. An excerpt from his announcement: "As soon as possible in the coming weeks, all air travellers arriving in Canada, with very limited exceptions, must reserve a room in a Government of Canada-approved hotel for three nights at their own cost, and take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival at their own cost. More details will be available in the coming days." I hope that this will not be finalized until AFTER I arrive (on 05 Feb), but I am fully ready and expectant to comply with such added restrictions if necessary. Given that, however, I already have exemption to temporarily exit from quarantine to do what I need to do.

I would actually like to return to Hong Kong earlier than my booked flight, but no CX flights available on 24 or 25 Feb.

Want to give a short update here: called MPC just now to check on a booking for end of year, and on the off-chance, just asked about 05 Feb availability of using points to upgrade from PEY to J. Indeed, a seat was available! Grabbed this upgrade immediately for 28,000 points.

I checked again with a dummy booking for full points redemption on 05 Feb, and the result shows "fully booked" for redeeming on points.

The 14 day quarantine has been around since last year. You have to quarantine at home or at a hotel.

Congratulations for securing an upgrade, which is quite nice to have a more private seat especially under the epidemic. I recon the flight is very empty anyway so they don’t mind giving you the upgrade award when you call in.

Even pre-pandemic I frequently secure the AsiaMiles PEY->J upgrade between T-24hr to T-3 to 5 days, and that's with a relatively full J cabin (e.g. something like J3 C2 D2 I0)

There are exemptions based on why you are travelling, I returned to Canada from the US last week with an essential provider exemption. While I still need to isolate except for work, and follow strict rules when performing essential work, I can leave my residence to perform those tasks.
I did have a negative test the night before returning to Canada and another negative PCR on arrival.

05 Feb CX 838 HKG-YVR ended up having only 4 passengers in Business Class. As I said, got the redemption upgrade a few days prior to the flight, but do not know why the bookable upgrade would not clear. And, also quite ironic that, after the flight, I got an email from Ms. Anna Ng (Assistant Manager, Marco Polo Club) which remarked about my account: "Noticed that there are unused bookable upgrades available and feel free to let us know when you want to use it. We hope it can make your next journey an enjoyable one."
