I wanted to apply for the recommended BEA Flyer World Mastercard, but there's no 'Apply Now' button on the card's page. Maybe they are discontinuing it..?

The 'BEA World Mastercard' seems to be the same $5/mile for all spending. Is that a fair assessment? Is it worth getting?

World MC replaced Flyer World but is otherwise the same (if you choose the miles option (the dining option precludes subsequent redemption into miles))

World MC used to require BEA Private Bank to apply but it is no longer the case now (however, you still need to be their banking customer to qualify for annual fee waiver - even their most basic savings account)

Thanks, that's what I had assumed.

My MPF is with BEA and that should qualify for a perpetual fee waiver too, per their Schedule of Fees & Charges PDF.

Seems fees are going up for BEA Flyer World Mastercard.
https://t.mkg.hkbea.com/activities_w...bf7900019082d9

Wonder if there will be "manual" fee waiver, ie like we must do with HSBC - call up and navigate the phone tree to apply for fee waiver once a year. I have never paid a card fee in Hong Kong in >10 years.
Effective from 24th April 2021, the following fees and charges will be amended for BEA World MasterCard:

Annual Fee Principal Card: HK$1,800 Supplementary Card: HK$900

Effective from 24th April 2021, the following fees and charges will be amended for All BEA Credit Cards (except the BEA Corporate Card and BEA SupremeGold World Mastercard):

Annual fee waiver to principal cardholders who maintain a valid designated BEA account will no longer be applicable (including all relevant supplementary cards).

Remark: Designated accounts include all deposit accounts, payroll accounts, mortgage loans, consumer loans, and MPF accounts.

Opening a savings account waived all fees, but it means a branch visit for this old-fashioned bank which will challenge a lot of people around here.

You can spend your way into a waiver, like my BEA bank-account less mother

I have never been charged a fee, I don't have a BEA savings account but my company does use them for MPF so I guess thats why.

I will probably be cutting up this card now, hard to justify the fee just for the miles, no other real perks.

Worth risking a year and then begging BEA for a fee waive if/when it shows up? This is my main card for local spend, I'm coming close to the limits each month also.

If this is your main card for local spend, then you are almost 100% guaranteed to be able to waive the annual fee.

BEA putting in this charge is really to get rid of people who hold the card for nothing else but the occasional promos, then just hitting the minimum spend for these promos.

Just wondering if you guys have any recommendations on a credit card that has no oversea charges?

I found is the "CNCBI GBA Dual Currency Credit Card"

However, when I checked furthur here: https://www.cncbinternational.com/_d...facts-stmt.pdf

They do not say anything with regards to Fees relating to Foreign Currency Transaction?

I also just found the "Standard Chartered Smart Credit Card" which does not seem to actually charge any fees - would anyone recommend this card? Transactions will mostly be done in USD

Thanks

Smart is the only HK-issued V/M that offers a full, ungimmicky waiver on the 1.95%. And lets you earn a basic 180:1 (0.56%) rebate on top of it (but getting the rebate out of the rebate account into your credit card statement is deliberately troublesome https://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/show/33868?page=3 )

I remember Public Bank used to have on the Plat Visa "no added fee" which means they forgo the 0.95% but still pass on the 1.00% from V/M.
Citi Cash Back 2%/SCB Simply Cash 2%/SCB Executive Platinum 2% overseas rebate you the fee but do not add on any earn on top of it.
I do not count CUP "no foreign currency conversion fee" as an apples-to-apples comparison to V/M because a) acceptance and b) Unionpay rates are up to 0.5% higher than V/M before fee.

Bank of China Taobao World Mastercard also waives the 1.95% overseas spending handling fee (terms and conditions of this waiver available here). No annual fee. HK$15 = 1 Asia Mile / HK$8 = 1 PhoenixMile / HK$12 = 1 Eastern Mile.

Edit: China Construction Bank (Asia) Virtual Credit Card also waives the 1.95% foreign currency transaction fee. HK$50 cash rebate for HK$3,000 accumulated spending amount.

AMEX has launched a new card called the Explorer card: https://www.americanexpress.com/hk/e...er-credit-card

Essentially it gives $5 = 1 mile, but instead of just limiting it to Asia Miles / Cathay Pacific it now includes 10 partner airlines: https://www.americanexpress.com/en-h...ravel/airlines

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a better card than Citi Premier Miles and flexible enough to transfer miles to other airlines

But when I got my Feb statements, I noticed there was missing Rewardcash. Since there weren’t many transactions on the statement, a CS agent quickly traced the non-online transactions to Uber as well as Ubereats after 21 Jan.

The agent did not offer any explanation why a transaction in one week count but not the next “the system says so”/“it is what it is”.

I troubleshoot PayPal and noticed Uber was under category “Automatic Payment”.
I was done changing my two accounts over to CCB JD when the missus walked in and asked why was I changing my Uber setup.
I explained what I found, and she opened her HSBC Internet Banking for me to check. She wasn’t missing 4% from her Uber rides - any of them (there were three in the last statement cycle).

I then dig deeper and realised she didn’t route her Uber transactions thru PayPal.
I quickly disabled my PayPal linkages to Uber and entered my Red cards directly into Uber. Hopefully that’ll solve things until next time someone tinkers with the system.
