//At amazon.com, for example, you can choose the payment currency at checkout. - If I choose HKD as payment currency still use the HSBC Red vs selecting USD as payment currency?

Yes, though Amazon rate for USD is always near HKD8 (high)

//Do any non-HKD purchases online then generally count as overseas spending, and I can use the HSBC Visa Signature (with multipliers on overseas spend)?

Non-HK spending. So if you spend overseas in HKD, that is still overseas (such as, Amazon in HKD or Chrono24 which always charges in destination currency)

//Are uber rides covered with HSBC Red?

Yes
just want to clarify:
Do online non-hkd count as 4%?

For the new card, this line in the T&C is key: EveryMile Cardholders can enjoy preferential rate when converting RewardCash to miles or points of frequent flyer programmes and hotel loyalty programmes on HSBC Reward+ App. The latest preferential rate of $1 RewardCash to 20 miles/points.

The normal rate is 1 RewardCash = 10 miles/points. EveryMile now has a redemption rate that is twice as good. This also encourages people to convert RC into Miles, instead of using it as a cash rebate.

However, I wonder if "EveryMile Cardholders" means that once you hold an EveryMile card, all your RC can be redeemed at this preferential rate, or if its only the RC earned via EveryMile.

Thanks

So designated spend is $2/mile or 2.5% rewardcash rebate, general and overseas $5/mile or 1% rewardcash, Payme $12.5/mile or 0.4% rewardcash

Sounds like EveryMile is comparable or even better than SCB Cathay or AE Explorer

Quick thoughts of AE Explorer vs HSBC EveryMile
  • Both are $5 = 1 mile, but HSBC has a chance of hitting the selected merchants and categories for $2 = 1 mile
  • HSBC has pretty bad redemption rate; 1% for general spend and possibly 2.5% for selected merchants, but AE you can redeem points at 2% cash back if you book travel via their portal
  • Both have a stated annual fee that can be waived upon hitting a certain amount of annual spend, 120k for HSBC and 150k for AE; however I think you can get both waived even if under that figure
  • Some other marginal differences; HSBC offers 6 lounge visits to Plaza Premium while AE offers 10, and HSBC travel insurance covers mobile phones
Honestly the cards are pretty similar. I would prefer AE and HSBC simply for flexibility and not being tied to Cathay. Only consideration is you can earn Club Points on SCB CX card, but it's useless for most people.

I have the AE Explorer card and will just stick with that. Not interested in signing up for EveryMile.

Thanks for the comparison. I have SCB CX but I am thinking to switch over to HSBC EveryMile or AE Explorer in the new year

Similarly, I wonder whether this means all transfer partners get ‘unlocked’ for RC earned on other cards. I would love to be able to convert my RC more flexibly with all the new partners. As of today, my Reward+ app still shows Asia Miles and has a comment next to Avios/KrisFlyer saying they’re “exclusive” to Premier cardholders.

This is a good summary but a couple points that I would add: Explorer is better for foreign currency spending ($4 = 1 mile) and also has its own bonus categories ($3 = 1 mile) though not as lucrative as EveryMiles but it includes any airline and some selected merchants.

A differentiator between the two would be the transfer partners. EveryMile offers hotel partners and some more unique airline partners (e.g. it’s the first card in HK to partner with Air Canada AFAIK) but Explorer includes Virgin Atlantic and some others that may be a draw for some people.

I’ll go into a card if I have some use for a transfer partner. Currently I’m back to the stage of trying to find miles that have value https://onemileatatime.com/last-minute-airline-awards/

Unless you don't have any HSBC credit cards now, the AE Explorer welcome offer is much better.

The only issue is VISA widely accepted and one of the main reasons I cancelled my AE card years ago especially in Asia. The card benefits are pretty close so I will probably cancel my SCB CX at the end of the year and switch over to HSBC or AE
