um
Was that a physical letter or an email message?

I was under the impression that the magnetic stripe on the card was required for upgrades with miles at the airport. Is that not the case?

You don’t need the magnetic stripe to upgrade at the airport.

It was a physical letter.

Physical card will come in handy during check-in while flying oneworld partners, in certain countries.

Won’t they honor the mobile card in our smartphones?

The problem is not everyone's phone has roaming enabled. And it is not always you can get WiFi access in the airport.

Given the technology nowadays, I would say it is easier to fake a mobile card (as you can show an image of the card) than the physical card.

By my very basic experimentation the card in Apple wallet and inside the Cathay Pacific app on iOS can indeed be accessed without an active network connection.

That was not part of the scope of my experiment.

Don't worry. I am simply teasing you.

My point is the benefit of a physical card trumps the convenience of a digital card.

Maybe we will be invited to redeem miles for a physical card. 😉

There may be a point in the future where contactless payments are the norm and banks stop issuing plastic cards. You can fit as many cards as you want in your digital wallet

Yezzzz, and when your phone is stolen or just "broken" (it's pretty vulnerable electronic stuff after all), you can not even buy a new phone, you can not drive home (because your car access was through the phone and your spare key is at home), etc, etc.

In plain ordinary old-fashioned terms that's called "single point of failure(s)". Create several of them and Murphy will show just where they are and nag you with the nasty consequences. Just print your ticket and boarding pass

I believe that was an actual option in the past:

Mobile payment is now widespread... Octopus will be added to Apple Pay shortly too. That future is very close!
