Merging two one-way awards into a return

I have two separate one way award tickets HKG-MEL and MEL-HKG booked at different times due to availability -- the waitlist for the HKG-MEL J leg only cleared recently.

We will travel with a lap infant, and the pricing of the infant ticket is significantly lower when booked as a return (10% of full fare J) compared to 2x one ways. If I call in, would they be able to merge the two itineraries into one so as to reduce the lap infant ticket price?

no need to merge

u can buy a seperate return J infant ticket independent of your redemption ticket

The infant ticket is its own individual ticket with ticket number. It does not have to be attached to your ticket. So you don’t need to worry about merging two reservations, as that’s not possible anyways.

That's very helpful -- I was always under the impression that the infant has to be added on to the booking (given that the baby's name is currently in the existing one way award bookings).

Will call and get that sorted ASAP.

Since were in this topic.

is this possible, I have a waitlisted LHR-HKG and I have AMS-HKG-KUL booked. If LHR-HKG clears the waitlist will I be able to reissue it to LHR HKG KUL instead.

In fact, it is technically impossible to merge any two PNRs, award or revenue.

Correct info and best advise. Just did similar with another airline (UA). Just make sure you confirm the lap baby ticket has been registered on all flights.

So I called the HK call centre tonight and they said because the infant is already booked and confirmed on the return leg, they will not be able to book a new return ticket for the infant. For some reason they are able to rebook the outbound though (given the original outbound ticket was in Y, and now changed to J).

The price difference isn't huge but looks like I have to bite the bullet.

i see some solutions here:-

1. delete your infant from your original booking -> thought this would be trivial given there is no e-ticket attached to that infant as yet

2. you can buy a J infant ticket from a travel agent instead of call centre (you just need the fare basis). they will ask for proof of adult travel (from which you can give your 2 redemption tickets).

I’ve recently ticketed an infant (well, two) for ORD-HKG-SIN where, for the adults, the ORD-HKG is part of a longer revenue ticket (I-> upgraded to A with BUDs) and HKG-SIN a redemption in U. Just need an infant fare basis that works for the routing in the cabin class (not fareclass) the adults are booked in, irrespective of the number/type of underlying bookings.

Infant bookings done through the Cx call centre.

Thank you -- I can certainly try this provided that the existing infant tickets are refundable (however I doubt the return leg is). How would I go about buying a separate lap infant ticket via a travel agent? Are there any websites allowing me to search for lap infants only? Or do I have to go through a physical TA (in which case could you recommend one in HK?)?

I just went to a physical shop (did this a few years ago - unfortunately that shop closed).


I would say though its normally easier to just buy it off CX instead of a travel agent (I cannot remember why i did use the TA route before.. think it was to build some relationship... but i have done it a few times)

First you call up CX and ask them for the price - what did they quote you? Also good if you could ask them the fare basis they are quoting you on (you should ask them for I class business fare)

Assuming they did quote you properly (I class) - then you go to the travel agent and say you want to buy a return infant ticket in fare class (IAARRWC8 - which is ~USD5613 + tax for adults) and check with them the fare basis + how they calculate it (normally they are not that different from CX)

In any case, return infant fares to Australia were ~US$650 +/- including taxes when i bought them a few years ago.. but this was before the fuel surcharge went up...

Thank you @ermen. Unfortunately the cancellation fee of the already booked return leg is so high that I can only get taxes back -- so I'm better off buying a separate one way outbound ticket anyway, despite the high cost.

Btw, when I spoke to CX they said I class is not eligible, and quoted an even higher price for the return infant fare (around 5800 HKD).
