HKG Airport shut down 12 August

Wasn’t allowed to check in and go airside just now. About 10 minutes later, we were told that all flights would be cancelled today and customers are to call hotline to rebook. Now on the way back out to the city via airport express

Airport chiefs on Monday ordered all carriers to cancel flights out of Hong Kong for the rest of the day, after thousands of anti-government protesters descended on the airport.

Flights already in the air would be allowed to land. It was unclear how long cancellations would go on for.

Over 10,000 people are packed in right now and it looks like it's forcing into the departures area. Fears it could spread or spill over into the sterile zone? Not sure.

I have a flight into China in the morning...what do people think the situation will be then?
Also I was in Wan Chai last night the the way the police acted is totally out of order.

Why don’t the protesters just do it within the city and leave the airport alone? If they want to get sympathy from the international community, this will just backfire on them, as can be seen in comments in the social media.

Or simply just arrest everyone. The airport is very easy to isolate. The police can take as long as they want to arrest everyone there who can't show a good reason to be there.
I guess the plans for large-scale internment camps are already in place.

Depends on what the police would do. If they come in and shoot everyone (tear gas, rubber bullets or more serious), then I don't see why the international community would "backfire" on their current sympathy.
