Well, it could be 1) I am a U.S. citizen; 2) I travel on UA; 3) I flew to Guam first.
I know (1) is not a reason, (2) UA is more a target than CX, and (3) possibly a good reason.

Flew to the US twice last month. Both times they asked the security questions in the boarding area - "so what are you doing in the US?", "how long are you there for?" "Does your company pay for your accommodation?" etc - stupid/useless questions. One of those times I was SSSS'ed so was escorted by the CX staff who scanned my BP to the security guards before the boarding bridges separating F/J and Y entrances, where they opened my hand-on and did some explosive detection test. It was done in less than 5 mins. The other time just went straight onto the plane after BP scan.

Flew CX HKG to LAX yesterday and got asked questions prior to boarding. "Where are you coming from?" "What were you doing there?" "Did anyone give you anything?" "Was your luggage with you at all times?"

Flew HKG-ORD in May 2018, and everyone had their bags searched at the gate regardless of SSSS, so that was really annoying.

IIR incorrectly - could be second half of 2018. The current process is: you got interviewed at the gate, get a purple sticker, and proceed to secondary bag search only if you are SSSS, which is consistently with LHR procedures on AA.

The bag search thing has been for years unfortunately, and I began to care less about it, which is still better than the typical domestic TSA. The most annoying part to me is the lack of in-town check in, glad it's gone for now.

But are they still confiscating those dangerous bottles of water or other liquids acquired in the airport?

You know what's funny? You can still see those useless airport security near UA check-in area (i.e. Aisle G) and at gate for SSSS.

Unless you get searched, you should be safe.

No, you can now carry on as much water or other nefarious substances as you want. No more searching your bags at the gate for dangerous contraband, unless of course you win the SSSS lottery.

I think my first return departing from HKG after they eliminated the gate search, I hit the SSSS lottery but I still got to keep my water, lucky me!
