But for OP’s case in HK, at all times I’ll at least have something in the lounges at HKG. For food, KA has passed its heyday I think...

I think so too. This is really true for most lounges in the outstations served by KA in Mainland China (other than Beijing & Shanghai) - Small lounges with only limited choices of cup noodles and biscuits offered. Drinks are limited to tea, dilute coffee, canned coconut juice and bottled water.

I always check my online boarding pass before leaving the lounge (or sometimes just when I'm in the lounge), and, if I'm lucky to receive an upgrade, I go to the lounge receptionist and ask them to give me a new boarding pass. Sometimes, I will also ask for another seat instead of the one I was given. Not sure if it actually matters or not, but I always feel that if I actually got a new boarding pass, then they are less likely to put me back to Y.

Also a matter of timing. Lounge food "too early" vs Economy food - no brainer. Eat in lounge. Lounge food "too early" vs J food at dinner time - much closer. i chose to eat at the right time.

So I got a call from KA after I sent in my complaint. The lady was very friendly and very apologetic and did appear to understand why I was annoyed (which was a first!). She said that the staff were playing around with upgrading passengers but that not everyone got an upgrade and so some people were put back (so this was me clearly) but that there was not check by the IT staff who just sent out the emails regardless. She said she will try and ensure that such emails are double checked before being sent next time.
So - nothing actually resolved, but she was nice about it.

Those big catering buildings we see around airports cook less than 10% of food on board. Their main purpose is to store and assemble these precooked foods for departure flights and add the finishing touches with fresh vegetables, fruits etc.
Lounge food, some precooked, some frozen and while some, not a lot, are cooked to order.

A large percentage of food on board, be it J or Y are cooked and frozen, days or weeks in advance at off-site facilities

pressurization on your taste buds...Given a choice I always eat in the lounge (especially when it is
Pier or Wing) before the flight...
