The North Satellite Concourse is usually for smaller planes - A320 or A321.

After careful consideration and re-checking all flight possibilities and combinations we have decided to opt for the VN flights to Da Nang, we appreciate it will be after midnight when we get into Hoi An (the Cathay flight would gain us about 5 hours we would arrive early evening but would meant that we would have to leave our hotel in Beijing in the early hours to get to the airport and check in etc when we can just leave mid morning and not have to rush). Either way we lose the day travelling.
Please would anyone know what the VN lounge is like at Beijing?
Thank you all so very much for all your great advice and help we really appreciate it.

I just had a 1.5 hr connection in HKG.
My inbound flight was an hour delayed, leaving me just about 25 minutes to connect.
The good news: They were very organized and had an agents waiting for me and others with close connections to escort us to our gates. I made the flight with minutes to spare.
The bad news: My luggage did not.

Glad to hear you caught your flight in HK but sorry to hear your luggage did not make it, hope you didn`t have to wait too long to have it delivered to you.
After all our faffing about we changed our day of travel and have booked with Cathay after all as VN don`t fly on Tuesdays. We fly out of Beijing at 10am arrive 14.05 HK then 4 hours in HK and a later flight to Da Nang at 18.15pm (so hopefully that is plenty of time even with a delay) All flights booked now for our 3 week trip so fingers crossed the plan works.
Thank you all once again for your help and great advice, as if I had gone with the really short layover I would have been really worried.... 4 hours to enjoy the Business Lounges :-)

Hi moondog, all our flights are booked. We are going to take a chance and hope that with 4 hours between flights in HK we will hope for the best. As we are visiting Beijing on the 144 hour visa we have 5 full days then we travel to Da Nang on paper our plan works! Hopefully it will all work out, if it wasn`t for you guys I would have booked the flight with only 1 hr 35 mins connection! so for that I am so very grateful.

4 hours is good.
If there is some serious ATC delay the CX staff in PEK is quite good at putting pax on earlier flights. Just let them know that you have a CX connection in HKG.

The earlier flights idea is good in theory, but everyone else has the same idea, and once they fill up, they're no longer viable. I think the OP should be okay with for hours, but most of us have experienced very long delays PEK at times.

Hi, thank you again for for all your help so far.
Fingers crossed it all goes to plan. Was hoping you might be able give us a little more advice please, we are wondering about what time to leave our hotel to get to PEK, we will hopefully have checked in online. Our flight is a Monday at 10am, we are staying at The New World Hotel (am finding it a little unclear as to how much time we have to allow ourselves at the airport for security etc)
With regards to getting to PEK we are not sure whether to try and book our driver who is taking us to the Gt Wall or ask the hotel to get us a taxi, just want to make sure we get there on time, appreciate could be bit busy as its Monday morning.
Grateful for any more advice and help you can give us. Thank you again

For a 10a departure, I would try to get to the airport by 830a. You didn't mention which new world hotel, but allow 50 mins by taxi from hujialou or 1.25 hours from downtown (that is rush hour). Subway plus aex also works in both cases, theoretically, but the crowds and transfers suck, especially with luggage.

Hi moondog, thank you for your reply. Our hotel is New World Hotel, No. 8 Qinian Street, Chongwenmen, Dongcheng District, Beijing. We would definitely want a taxi or to book a driver wouldn`t try the subway with our luggage. So thinking we should maybe aim to leave hotel about 7am? any idea about how much a taxi would be? thanks again
