Flying one million miles in a calendar year on CX metal

I recently flew over one million BIS (butt-in-seat) miles in a calendar year on CX metal...a nice milestone.

If you're interested in the specifics...I made a timelapse video of my entire CX flight log that you can watch below (jump to 0:36 mark)

For the road warriors in this forum...what's the most BIS miles you ever flew in a calendar year (on just CX metal only and I guess KA could count too)?

QRC3288 Apr 15, 2019 10:04 pm

WOW!

Nowhere close to you! I think I've maybe done 200k actual BIS miles on CX/KA metal, maybe 250k tops in a year, and that was before when I was more loyal.

Btw how do you know your total BIS miles? Do you track it?

QRC3288 Apr 15, 2019 10:08 pm

Actually I have so many more questions. What do you do? I watched your video it looks like a lot of JNB-HKG-JFK? Why do you choose that routing? Is it torture flying that much? Any color you can add would be great.

I just can't understand how that much flying is required in this day and age, unless you're a pilot? that sounds completely brutal to me but to each their own and hopefully you enjoy it. 1mm in a year is insanity!

Congratulations!

Same here. At the minimum - how does OP define BIS for starter?

Ausriver Apr 16, 2019 3:36 am

I think BIS mean the actual miles... not say 150% miles if you fly F etc...

I've occasionally done frequent trips between Australia and China via CX, say 4 or 5 return trips in a month, I would have to say that even with the help of noise cancellation headphone, I felt like I could always hear the engine sound a week or so after intensive fly of a month.

Hawes7701 Apr 16, 2019 4:00 am

This is insane!!!

At at an average flying speed of 500mph that’s 84 days of the year - or, close to 25% of every minute of the year - plus time to/from/within the airport.

Wow. Just wow!!

CX HK Apr 16, 2019 4:55 am

Let's be honest, the real question we all want to know - did CX give you any sort of recognition for hitting 1m miles in a year??

G-CIVC Apr 16, 2019 6:07 am

I got a case of champagne flutes with the CX logo (those used in the lounges) through the mail recently...not sure if it's related to recent crazy amounts of flying (I recently reset DM again at 1600 3 months after my previous renewal...)

vj_rama Apr 16, 2019 6:45 am

Wow. For JNB-HKG-JFK, that works out to roughly 2.5 roundtrips per month! That is totally insane. Congrats!!!

At the same time I found out that CX's fare for JNB-NYC is insanely cheap:

Congratulations! I'm as curious as everyone else on the forum... what sort of job do you have that allows you to travel every week, and I'm guessing -on your own dime? And did you really fly so often for Iron Man / Avengers End Game?

Wow that is amazing.

I read about a guy who flew 1 million on United in a year. I think it was this guy

Thanks for the nice messages! Let me try to answer some of the questions...

Yes, I actively track my past flights in a Google spreadsheet (supplemented with data from Flightradar24). I use ExpertFlyer quite a lot to check seat maps and flight loads for future flights.

BIS (butt-in-seat) meaning actual miles flown...no multipliers if you fly a higher class (what Ausriver said). I used the flight distances listed from the CX in-flight magazine (or website) for calculating the miles between two cities/airports.

Yup...I have tickets to the AMC Avengers: Endgame (59 hour) Movie Marathon next week. I'm a big Marvel fan...and can't wait.

At the end of the day, I'm a miles and points enthusiast. I try to earn miles and points when they are cheaper, and then redeem them during peak season when hotel and airlines prices skyrocket. Probably no different from many of you in this forum. I'll circle back & answer more questions when I have some more free time this weekend.
