booking on Air Canada?

Newbie question. I haven't managed to find clarity on this despite a few hours of searching.

Air Canada lists Cathay as a "Worldwide Partner". I asked them about this on chat and they said aeroplan can book on Cathay. Can I not use AM to book on AIr Canada? If not I made a huge mistake transferring my Avion points over to AM.

I guess that's true but I'm having a hell of a time finding any flight I can book besides Toronto from my location (yyt st john's). What I wanted to do was book YYT-HAL-BOS-HKG-HAN open jaw to SGN-HKG-BOS-HAL-YYT.

Alternatively YYT-YYZ-HKG-HAN open jaw SGN-HKG-YYZ-YYT will not book.

I can apparently book these flights if I remove the Air Canada from the flights.

Is there a way to solve this problem?

Unless things have changed, very limited - domestic routes..

How did you transfer Avios to Asiamiles?

You may have to buy HKG-HAN and SGN-HKG with cash

Things have not changed and you can't have that many segments in an Asia Miles award anyway. Max 4 segments only. For up-to-date information on the AC segments eligible for redemption (or accrual), see
https://www.asiamiles.com/en/earn-miles/airlines/detail.html/air-canada. Both YYZ-YYT and YYZ-YHZ (Halifax, if that's what you meant) are covered routes, but not YYZ-YHZ. Also, you can't book this online; need to call AM.

Thank you.
I was not aware of the segment limit. Certainly I would prefer fewer segments anyway but I am new to this. If I understand you correctly YYT - YHZ (thanks for the airport code) is not covered but YYT to YYZ or YHZ would be.

The AM phone number is completely eluding me on their web site. I will continue searching but if anyone has it at their finger tips I would appreciate the tip. I think the only way for me to wrap my head around this is to speak to a person.

Umm...are you the same person as OP? I don't think you are allowed to have 2 accounts per https://www.flyertalk.com/help/rules.php.

YYZ-YYT, YYT-YYZ, YYZ-YHZ, and YHZ-YYZ are covered. YYT-YHZ or YHZ-YYT are not covered.

You can find AM's number at https://www.asiamiles.com/en/support...other-contacts. For Canada, it is 1877 631 6283. Expect long wait at times since presumably you have no MPO status.

The number of sectors and routing allowed are spelt out at https://www.asiamiles.com/en/terms-a...onditions.html. It would not be possible for you to do YYT to HAN/SGN round-trip in a single award. You can either break the trip into two awards or buy the intra-North America or intra-Asia sectors.

Super helpful Ernest, big thanks!

I waded through the T&C and I think I get those rules (mostly) now. I think I'm going to scrap this trip idea and investigate more west coast or Central America destinations. It makes that initial trip to Toronto more palatable. I may call them and see if reversing the transaction can be reversed and if so what the time limit might be. it might be the best course of action.

Note you cannot mix AC with AA, LA, or any carrier other than CX in an AM award. Once your points have been converted to AM, it would be close to impossible to be converted back.

sleepybedhead Mar 21, 19 5:12 pm

yes I just got off the phone with them and they were quite firm that the points cannot be returned.

I'm saddened to hear that I can't mix any other airlines but CX with AC. That is even more limiting. I didn't see that in the T&C.

I will consider this a learning lesson. I still have lots of options but it looks like I will have to get myself to Toronto or Boston before I can use these miles. It's inconvenient yet workable and I have years to do it..Thank you for your patience Ernest.

At https://www.asiamiles.com/en/terms-a...ed-awards.html, it states that "Standard Awards allow single-carrier or mixed-carrier redemption. Single-carrier redemption on Standard Awards is available on all Partner airlines. For mixed-carrier redemption on Standard Awards, a maximum of two carriers is allowed, which must include Cathay Pacific or Cathay Dragon, subject to airline partnership agreement." AC is one of the carriers that participate in "Asia Miles Mixed-carrier Awards" per https://www.asiamiles.com/en/redeem-...ard-chart.html. Since KA doesn't fly to Canada, CX+AC is the only option left. You can decide between YYT-YYZ-HKG or YYZ-HKG-SGN/HAN and buy the other sectors. Note miles expire in 3-4 years depending on when you joined AM.
