Does anyone know what happened to the CX829 YYZ-HKG flight this morning?

Hello!

Does anyone know what happened to the CX 829 flight that left Toronto this morning? It shows the flight returning to Toronto and then taking off again to Osaka?

Thanks in advance!

I would guess there was a problem (medical?) on board so the plane has to return. After that the crew doesn’t have enough time to fly to HKG so they fly to KIX and change crew...

I don't think the aircraft ever left Toronto. It just got delayed till 5am for some reasons. It looked like a mechanical reason.
It looked like the crews would run out of time to go nonstop to HKG when they were ready. It is possibly easier for everyone to go to Osaka and get a crew change.

Here is the info from expertflyer:

My bad, Carfield is right. If you search CX829 on Flightradar24 it made a couple loops in YYZ taxiways before returning to the terminal. Could be a techical problem (or pax who want to disembark and they have to locate baggage etc)

Thanks for the quick response guys!

Just hoping that this doesn't happen to me in a couple of days when I'm on the flight.

Could the plan be to rebook folks on CX flight(s) from KIX to HKG (or KIX to their final destinations)?

I don't think CX would have extra crew at KIX, but they can deadhead crew to there from HKG before the diverted flight lands there, but depending on loads it could be cheaper to just rebook everyone and ferry the aircraft to where it's needed.

In my experience, your rebooking suggestion doesnt happen. I've been on exactly 3 CX longhauls that have done this (2x in TPE, 1x in PEK), and a colleague had it happen to him at ICN. In 4/4 instances crew are ferried before you arrive, board immediately, and you're airborne again within 60-90 minutes tops. They definitely didn't deplane people. Iirc we weren't allowed to deplane actually, that was made pretty clear. I seem to remember people whose final destinations we're TPE and PEK asking to get off, answer was no.

Windstorm in Toronto last night.

Winds sustained 40-60km/h with gusts of 110km/h.

Assuming heavy winds were a factor in the delay departing.

def not possible as CX does not have the rights to carry pax from yyz-kix. Unfortunately pax can only be rebooked ex YYZ to another airline or HKG.
fakecd and MSPeconomist like this.

This 3 - 4 hours' delay is better than the 10-hour delay on February 1 due to pilot sickness (CX 829 as well). Each passenger was only given $35 food voucher for the 10-hour delay. Seems that CX829 has more chances to get lengthy delay.

i was on this flight and wind storm was NOT the reason. It was due to labor rules. Full write up coming shortly

We were stuck inside plane for 24 hours. Was personally my worst experience on a flight

At yyz, Flight leaves gate 30 min late, taxis to runway getting ready for takeoff and then turns back due to technical error, NOT wind speeds. In fact wind speeds and storm was calmed down by then and nothing related to this was mentioned as a reason. Plane gets fixed up for the next 2 hours, ended up taking off 3 hours+ late at around 4:45AM

Before taking off at YYZ we get announcement that the flight needs to re-route to Osaka due to labor rules with cabin crew not working more than certain number of hours. We would get a new crew in KIX

The biggest issue is that Throughout entire journey we are left with our standard 2 meals (of course this is not told in advance or made public, otherwise there would be a run on food, I was exhausted at that hour and didn’t even think to stash up on food)

From Toronto to Osaka for the first 17-18 hours of the trip we were served 1 meal. All snacks quickly ran out 8-9 hours into the flight. The second meal of breakfast was served after take off from KIX. I had to sip on orange juice just to get some blood sugar and stay conscious.

Cabin crew especially manager was terrible. Excuses were made up - sounded stupid and frankly every time I heard it I got more annoyed hearing it. Toilets were disgusting as expected.

Worst of all most if not all passengers with hunger issues (again thanks 10-seat abreast) as snacks quickly ran out

When we landed at Osaka we got served a Japanese bread type snack.

question is Where do we start with complaints/compensation.

On behalf of many passengers who aren’t sophisticated enough but are regularly screwed over by airlines with delayed flights or ordeals like this. Hopefully other passengers can easily google this thread and see that there are people out there who do care about passenger rights and need to say enough with airlines getting away without proper planning for situations like this one.

Departed yyz gate 1:50~
Take off yyz 4:45
Landed KIX 8:35
Departed KIX 10:10
Landed HKG 13:15
(all local Times)

I think CX 829 can be nominated for the worst flight in February.

CX 829 on 1 February 2019:

Scheduled departure: 01:20

Delay notification sent to passengers: 00:01 (that's why we were upset because CX could have sent out notification before passengers were headed to the airport; almost all passengers have arrived at the airport before the notification was sent out and received difference information from ground crew about flight reschedule)

Re-scheduled departure: 10:50 (due to pilot sickness; we were first told that the flight would be rescheduled for 06:00 and then was told that it would be scheduled for 09:00, but in the end, it was scheduled to 10:50)

Check-in open for the delayed flight: 06:00 (we were asked to report to the check-in counter between 05:00 and 06:00 in order to check in for the delayed flight to secure a seat; there was a snow storm in GTA so that means we were stuck in the airport from 23:00 to 10:50)

Actual departure: About an hour's delay (unknown reason)

Scheduled arrival: 15:31 +1

Actual arrival: About 1 hour's delay
