My HR department informed me that Citibank (as far as they knew) is the only bank that will open accounts for expats who only have the temporary HKID slip. Sure enough Citibank helped me out, and opened a Citigold account despite me not meeting any sort of deposit requirement.
I am not at all surprised to hear this about HSBC. I have heard similar reports before. They are troublesome.
Citi and SC have been very easy though.

Did you get a promotional Citigold for the first year? Or they actually keep in active without a needed balance? I wish I had that too ^_^
Citi HK never offered me even a Priority (despite I was having Priority account in Taiwan back then), but they were generous with credit card approvals.

SC opened Priority Banking account for me for the first year, matching my status in Taiwan. Downgraded to regular one after one year though.

I'm not aware that any of the HSBC Rewards of your choice categories cover Telecoms bills on autopay or otherwise though. I think that may need updating.

On the other hand, I've just noticed (reviving an earlier discussion) that for 2019 uSelect is explicitly in the Home/Supermarket category, which is good news.

Conversely, I understand that HKMA lifted the proof of address requirement but are any banks following this? I forgot to bring mine to BEA a few months ago when opening to avoid World Flyer fee, and their solution was to send me a letter to my address (which I forgot to bring proof for) and for me to bring the letter back to them and sign it, together with the postmarked envelope. Am wondering for those who might hold HKPR but don't live permanently in HK who might want to open accounts.

You can open account with a proof of any foreign address related to you. If you need to have HK address for whatever reason, changing address does not require any proofs

Citigold for one year then downgraded once the deposit requirement kicked in.

Does anyone know what Mileslife transactions code as on the credit card statement? Is it dining, or online?

Thank you Percy. Does this category fall into any of the spend buckets across any cards for bonus points purposes?

I've obviously missed something completely here. Apologies for the dumb question, but Citi has categorised rewards? I have a PremierMiles card and I've only ever known 1/$8 local, 1/$4 overseas. (Occasional promos excepted)

What have I missed?
