Basically, top up limit for credit cards will drop to $2000 (from $5000).

Can't say I am surprised, I guess this was a long time coming. While it is a big drop in limit, at least we can still earn points on the 2k.

I was told today that BEA Flyerworld is charging annual fee as there is policy change. Basically you can cut the card for good or you need to open some bank account with them. Are you all having this situation?

Yes - this applies to all BEA cards. The only way to waive annual fee now is to open a bank account with them - but starting 1 Aug 2019, there is no more penalty for deposits below HKD 5,000, so I guess technically you can just open an account and leave HKD 1 there.

I wonder if it would be useful for someone who has more cards than me (just HSBC and CitiPM) to add a section to the Wiki on fee waiver conditions?

The only data point I can offer is that Citi just waived my PremierMiles annual fee ($1800) when, for the first time in 20 years, I fell $20,000 short of the $100,000 automatic waiver condition.

Do you have any other cards with Citi? I have never reached the waiver minimum on my PremierMiles but have never paid the annual fee - probably because I have significant spend on my Citi Prestige?

No - I have no relationship with Citi except my PremierMiles card. But I've held that, and its previous incarnations, including the Cathay co-brand card, for 20 years, and I've spent way more than an average of $100K over those 20 years. But being retired with no more business travel booked to it my spend has been decreasing for the last few years.

To be honest I'm not sure if I reached the $100k waiver threshold every year previously, but this was the first year when an annual fee appeared on my account. I called, and it was waived within 24 hours.

Citi pm : Even if not auto waived, don't you get waived for the asking?

Yes - that's what I said - I called and it was waived within 24 hours. But that was with about $80,000 spend in the previous 12 months.

Don't worry. I think everyone gets waived unless they pissed off Citi in some way.

In fact the only cards you can't get waived are:
- HSBC Premier
--- any cards that require a minimum Total Relationship Balance generally (I don't know whether this will change now that lots of Premier-level TRBs are being abolished)

- Amex Plat Charge, Centurion, Plat Credit and CX Amex Elite (sometimes)

- Citi Prestige

There's a new Citi PayAll service where u pay 0.68% fee (for now, think it will go up to 2% like other countries), and u can send up to 50k payments a month (currently says for rent, tuition, etc.) to others and earn points/miles.
Anyone tried yet? I'm wondering how I can manufacture spend to 50k a month as it's a good rate to buy miles at.

Regarding the BEA account - is one allowed to just open account and let it sit dormant? Say if I only have $1 in there, and I let it sit. I assume it gets deactivated at some point, but if it continues to serve the purpose of the fee waiver, I guess it doesn't matter.

This is a poor move by BEA - expected competition from virtual banks in Sept have seen traditional banks try to make their services more attractive, not less.

No dormant fee https://www.hkbea.com/pdf/en/bank-ch...arges%20EN.pdf

Don't push it, they'll be asking for virtual banking account for waiver next.
