Is buying a Business Class ticket from HKG to LGW for 70,000 points stupid?

Hello everyone.

I am hoping to book a Business Class flight with Cathay Pacific from HKG to LGW on 10th July 2018. It appears to be possible for 70,000 points (or it was when I looked a couple of days ago).

Is this a good idea?

I've read that *buying* a ticket and then upgrading it is the best way to use my points, but I wonder if that information is up to date (I know changes occurred recently).

Doing it that way also seems very complex (certain classes of ticket only, not tickets from Sky Scanner or the like), has to be booked by phone, etc.

I'm thinking that just spending (nearly all) my points on the flight is far easier.

Thank you in advance

Simon (presently waiting impatiently for points to transfer to HSBC to Asia Miles and panicking that there will be no seats left to buy with points, or cash when they finally come through!)

I think if you have a need for a one-way ticket / Business / First Class ticket, it is never stupid to use the point to do it, but how you get back to HK is another big question mark if you need to.

Now if you talking about buying an upgrade-able ticket then use miles to upgrade it, then YMMV (Your Miles May Varies)

As ChrisLi already mentioned, for a oneway ticket its definitely good value to redeem miles and bear in mind what he also pointed out about getting back to HK which might be very costly if booking a one way return even in economy.

If you do have a need to get back to HK then maybe upgrading is a better choice...

Another potentially "stupid" point is the difference between R and I fares are sometimes not that much considering the underlying cost of miles.
e.g. HKG-LGW roundtrip Jul10-17: R fare HK$26.2k [+30K AM (pre-Jun22)/+50K AM (from Jun22)] and I fare HK$33.4k
(If you are flexible at plans and short of budget, think ex-XXX)

If it is just one-way, then redeeming HKG-LGW is good value especially if you are getting close the departure date and considering the price of an one-way ticket. I did a LGW-HKG one-way business class redemption just 5 hours prior to departure last year after MH cancelled my original flight. Of course, if you have to return to HKG, I would redeem a return flight or buy an ex-XXX R-class or go for one-stop business class option on other carrier.
