Cathay Pacific Upgrades? (Can trade UA)

I am going to fly on Cathay Pacific in coach and going to fly. I am not a frequent flyer in One World but will be soon.. is there any way to upgrade? I am a Star Alliance guy with UA upgrades... so who knows.. maybe I can trade?

Do I need Asia Miles to upgrade on coach tickets...?? Thanks.. sorry new to this.

I think you can use AA miles to upgrade. You can also use AsiaMiles.

At least for AA miles, you need a full-fare ticket. I.e. Y.

A few notes:

AAdvantage members can upgrade full-fare tickets on AA stock. You need to be flying at least H to earn AAdvantage miles. If so, sign up for the Gold Challenge (details at www.fewmiles.net) to get your elite status (or the Platinum Challenge if you think you can complete it)

AsiaMiles offers one-way and round trip upgrades from discount fares.

Good luck!

LAX-HKG is certainly worth upgrading. One has to nominate you in a redemption group, I think.

I have enough AsiaMiles points to do so but I also have plenty of upgrade 'instruments' with UA ....

LAX 1K, saw that you are a Starwood Gold too...in fact another option is for you to transfer Starwood points to Asia Miles and then use Asia Miles to upgrade...it costs 60,000 miles for roundtrip LAX-HKG upgrade, I believe, so you need to transfer at least 50,000 Starpoints (2x20,000 + 10,000 Starpoints = 2x25,000 + 10,000 Asia Miles)...and it's of course better if you are targeted for the current 20%-back Starwood promotion...then you will get 20%, i.e. 10,000 Starpoints back, that means you get to upgrade roundtrip LAX-HKG for 40,000 Starpoints...

or, depending on the "exchange rates" I might be interested in a trade too...I fly UA too...please send me an email if you want to discuss... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Great ideas.. I am going to look into the Starwood idea.. (just joined ASIA MILES yesterday).. thank you all for your help.

Funny how it goes.. fly Star Alliance for years and now a client is easier via One World... I am adaptable http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The truth be told, IMHO, is that, while CX service in Y is outstanding, sitting in the actual seat can be unbearable, especially after 17-19 hours.

I was most comfortable when my colleagues and I spent 4 or 5 hours standing near the exit door in the galley where they sort of set up a snack/drink table. The FAs were nice and didn't mind us there at all and the sandwiches and drinks became a self-serve deal.

If you are looking into the Starwood option then you can also transfer miles to AA. I think AA is only 50,000 miles round trip upgrade. Unless you are looking to use AsiaMiles on a discounted ticket. I assume you can do that?

I think it is going to be AsiaMiles if anything at all... I am looking into now but the time is short.. so who knows... at least I learned some great ideas..
